2024 MG HS Hybrid coming to Australia

This hi-tech model is being tested on Australian roads ahead of its imminent launch. When it arrives it will shake up Toyota’s dominance of the hybrid SUV scene.

Why Chinese EV brands will profit from new car policy

MG is polishing its next model in Australia ahead of its official debut.

The new MG HS shapes up as an affordable medium-sized hybrid machine that could see motorists think twice about the likes of Toyota’s RAV4 Hybrid.

News Motoring readers spotted a lightly camouflaged example in Sydney this week, wearing an “engineering development vehicle” label in Mandarin text on the back bumper.

The Chinese brand is expected to unveil the production model at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK next week.

A teaser video published by MG shows the car has slim LED lighting and modern bodywork similar to its sister car, the Roewe RX5 made by parent company SAIC Motor.

British customers will be able to choose between a turbo petrol engine or a more efficient plug-in hybrid option.

“EV” symbols on the test car’s registration plates suggest the test car is a successor to the plug-in hybrid model found in showrooms today.

MG Australia has not confirmed technical specifications for the car, which is expected to arrive locally in September.

Without giving much away, the brand says its new car will have “enhanced space and an array of new, driver-focused technology”.

The new HS will sit alongside the fresh MG3 hatchback and electric MG Cyberster convertible in local showrooms.

It will benefit from MG’s Pro Pilot suite of driver assistance tech and include infotainment features such as a digital dashboard and smartphone mirroring.

The model has traditionally been the weakest seller in the MG range, sitting behind the cheaper MG ZS SUV and compact MG3 hatch, though that could change with the introduction of a new model.
