The American brand has detailed its new big SUV with plenty of must have items, but buyers are in for a surprise when they see the price.

Jeep is set to launch a seven-seat version of its Grand Cherokee in Australia, pushing the big wagon into new territory.

Called the Grand Cherokee L it brings plenty of luxury and hi-tech features as well as heaps of interior space, but you’ll pay for the privilege when it arrives in the middle of this year.

Prices for the seven-seater start at $82,250 (before on-road costs) and rise to $115,450.

To put that in perspective the class-leading Kia Sorento with all the trimmings costs just $68,990 drive-away.

The current five-seat Grand Cherokee starts at about $66,000 drive-away.

Jeep Australia hasn’t revealed prices for the new five-seat Grand Cherokee due later this year.

Kevin Flynn, head of Jeep Australia, expects big things front he new Grand Cherokee L.

“As the most refined and technologically advanced model we’ve released to date, the arrival of the all-new Grand Cherokee L represents another landmark Jeep moment and sets the new standard for our brand,” he says.

The Grand Cherokee L will be available in three grades: Night Eagle, Limited and Summit Reserve.

Jeep has ditched V8 petrol and V6 turbo diesel engines from the current range.

Instead, all models are powered by a familiar 3.6-litre V6 petrol engine that makes 210kW and 344Nm, a loss of 3kW and 3Nm over the current version’s V6 petrol.

Every grade is all-wheel drive and comes with off-road driving modes and air suspension, keeping with the brand’s off-road heritage.

All models have a braked towing capacity of 2813kg.

The entry-level Night Eagle variant is priced at $82,250 and comes with a solid list of standard equipment.

There are 20-inch alloy-wheels, LED headlights, power tailgate, leather trimmed seats with the front pair heated and electronically adjustable.

Tech features include an 8.4-inch central display that is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, this is paired with a 10.25-inch digital instrument display and a wireless device charging pad.

Jeep has included plenty of active safety features including auto emergency braking, lane keep assist, blind spot detection and rear cross traffic alert among others.

Jumping up to the $87,950 Limited grade gets you premium leather trimmed seats with driver memory function, second row seat heating, a 10.1-inch central touchscreen and a nine speaker premium stereo.

The $115,450 Summit Reserve adds a low range gears for increased off-road ability, ventilated premium leather trimmed front seats with massage function, a hands-free power tailgate, ambient lighting, four-zone climate control and a 19 speaker McIntosh stereo.

It also scores 21-inch alloy wheels, birds eye view camera and two tone paint work with a black roof.
