2024 YangWang U9 revealed in China

The first sports car from a fast growing brand is unlike any other machine on the road and it’ll be extremely cheap compared to competitors.

Booming Chinese electric car brand BYD has revealed its wild new Ferrari rival.

Dubbed the YangWang U9, the head-turning electric hypercar has some seriously impressive stats.

It uses four electric motors – one powering each wheel for all-paw grip – to make an outrageous 960kW and 1680Nm, which is about the same as 10 Toyota Corollas combined.

BYD claims it can complete the benchmark 0-100km/h sprint in 2.3 seconds and has a top speed of 309km/h.

A circa-$360,000 price tag makes it a relative bargain in the hypercar realm where machines from Lamborghini and Ferrari can cost up to $1 million.

The U9 has some special tricks too.

It has special electronically controlled suspension that the brand claims will transform the way it drives.

It has about the same power as 10 Toyota Corollas.

The U9 is capable of leaning into corners, resisting body roll, jumping off the ground or resisting weight transfer during heavy braking or acceleration.

BYD president Wang Chuanfu said the body control system represented an important breakthrough.

“The BYD DiSus System is the first self-developed intelligent body control system launched by a Chinese automobile company, marking the breakthrough from zero to one,” he said.

“The BYD DiSus System will further secure the globally pioneering stance for BYD in the industry.”

The U9 will need to defy physics to enable the roughly 2500kg hypercar to perform like much lighter rivals.

It might fall foul of other EV users come charging time, though.

It can reportedly accept two chargers at once boosting its charging rate but occupying two supercharger spots.

It’ll have the same 800-volt architecture that allows rapid charging speeds in Kia and Hyundais.

The U9 can also perform a “tank turn”, which allows it to effectively turn on the spot.

Initially the car will only be sold in China and the boss of BYD’s Australian importer Luke Todd poured cold water on the YangWang brand arriving Down Under any time soon last year.
