Eats for teens? Yes please!

This week, Uber is officially launching Eats for teens - a new way of empowering teens to order their own food ahead of the school holidays.

The new account type aims to provide a solution for busy families, allowing for kids aged 13-17 to order their own food whenever they like - whether it’s an after school snack, or a cheeky dessert.

Ed Kitchen, Managing Director of Uber Eats ANZ, said that the development will be a game changer for busy parents.

“We’re proud to launch Eats for teens in Australia after the Uber for teens launch earlier last year. Being the first in APAC, we are confident the teens account feature will offer a convenient solution to busy Aussie family life,” he said.

“We know how tricky it can be to balance kids’ competing priorities and schedules, especially with teens who are constantly on the go - so, whether it's after school, on the weekends, or to keep up with hectic family schedules, Eats for teens ensures teens are fed and refueled with their favorite food, even when the juggle is real.”

“It empowers them to feel more in control of their lives”

If you’re reading this, panicking that your teen is about to spend all their money (or yours) on Uber Eats, we have good news for you.

Eats for teens has a host of restrictions and measures in place to keep children safe.

One of these measures is that Eats for teens accounts have a teen-friendly view in the app where they can only place orders from restaurant partners, while age-restricted items and regulated goods, such as alcohol, will be filtered out.

Parents will also be notified when their teen places an order, and can also set a custom monthly spending budget so they can’t go overboard - a huge factor for Sydney-based doctor and mum of two teens, Victoria Rose.

“I know some parents may have allowed their teens to share their Uber Eats account prior to Eats for teens being created, but this means that they would have had access to everything on the platform, including the bottle shop,” she told Kidspot.

“With Eats for teens, alcohol and age-restricted items are filtered out, and teens only have access to restaurants. It gives me peace of mind knowing that Uber Eats has vetted what's teen-safe. I also love that I have the ability to set a monthly budget and keep an eye on spending so we don’t have any unwanted surprises!”

Victoria said that one of the most beneficial parts of Eats for teens will be giving her two girls some autonomy.

“My girls are at a stage in life where they’re starting to make more and more decisions for themselves, whether it's about food, school, sports, or socialising. They are at an age where they are starting to earn their own money with weekend jobs and learning about budgeting,” she said.

“Eats for teens gives them a chance to make choices in a controlled environment, teaching them responsibility, budgeting, and mindful decision-making. Plus, it empowers them to feel more in control of their lives - and less like their mum’s always on their back!”

And, the convenience will be unmatched.

“Sometimes there’s nothing scarier than a hangry teenager, so I’m looking forward to using it to feed the girls when my husband and I aren’t around. Whether we’re stuck at work or away for the evening, they’ll love being able to order their own dinner or snack whenever they want,” she said.

“Plus, I know the girls are looking forward to having their friends over to order in and have a movie night together…no parents allowed.”

So… how do I do it?

Making an Eats for teens account on the Uber Eats app is easy, and can be done in just a few steps.

Tap Account > Family to create a Family profile. Tap Invite Family > Teen > Choose contact and select their name from your contacts (aged 13-17). Make sure your payment information is up to date and a spending limit has been set before your teen makes their first order.

Once this is done by a parent or guardian, the teen will receive an invitation to join Uber for teens, or to download the Uber Eats app if they haven’t already. They can begin using their teen account to place orders all on their own.

Off you go, get ordering!
