Nadia Bartel has revealed the “scary moment” she found a lump in her breast when she was just 18.

In an Instagram video promoting ghd’s limited-edition Pink Collection – which raises awareness and funding for breast cancer – the 39-year-old and her sister, Michelle Ring, said they’d both had benign lumps removed in the past.

“We’ve had a bit of a journey having lumps removed from both of our chests,” the Henne co-founder said in the clip.

“We’re really lucky they were both benign, but it was a little bit scary in those moments where we didn’t know what was happening.”

The mum-of-two stressed the importance of frequent check-ups, urging women to be “diligent”.

“I know that when we found the lump in my chest, it was many years ago – I think I was about 18, and that’s probably why you are checking more frequently, because we do have a bit of history in our family (of breast cancer) so we’re very diligent with checking.”

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in Australia, with approximately 57 Australians diagnosed with it each day, equating to over 20,000 a year, according to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

As part of its annual initiative, ghd will donate $20 from every pink product purchased to the NCBF. Over the 21-year partnership, the funds raised have helped fuel “groundbreaking” research, as well as empower breast cancer survivors.

Ring – who founded Henne with Bartel in 2019 along with their business partner, Laura Broque – reflected on her own, more recent experience, including the hesitation she’d felt about getting her breasts checked.

“It’s kind of that scary moment where you don’t really want to get checked, but you do want to get checked,” Ring said.

“I was very lucky that I did. It was a benign tumour in the end, but a very fast-growing tumour. It was only a few years ago … it was amazing that I got myself checked and got it removed.”

The duo’s brand has gone from strength to strength over the past five years, presenting at Australian Fashion Week in 2022 and 2023, a brick-and-mortar store in Melbourne’s Prahran, and the opening of a second location, this time in Sydney’s affluent Paddington, last month.

Bartel told news.com.au at the time it was a joy to see the label expanding to another state.

“We always had big plans and it is exciting to see our hard work paying off,” she said.

“The opening of our Sydney boutique is incredibly exciting, but it is just one step in our ambitious journey forward. We have even more exciting developments on the horizon.”
