The Maltese terrier cross has been named as Toowoomba’s most popular breed of dog, with more than 1000 registered in the region.

Hot on their tail were border collies and Labradors which came a close second and third, according to data collated by the Toowoomba Regional Council animal management team.

The news comes as little surprise to Preston resident Jo Carberry, who bought her Maltese Shih tzu pup Chuck from a breeder seven years ago.

“We had never owned the breed before we got Chuck,” Mrs Carberry said.

“They are a very loving, loyal and protective dog – and they make a fantastic family pet.”

Online, Maltese terrier mixes are described as both gentle and gutsy.

They have been named as the most popular breed in numerous Australian cities over the years, including Perth, Melbourne and Cairns.

“It’s important that they are socialised – Chuck isn’t fond of other dogs,” Mrs Carberry said.

“But overall, they are a great breed to have as an inside dog as they don’t shed (their hair)”.

Staffordshire bull terriers and cattle dogs rounded out the top five most popular pooches for the Garden City, with the list omitting mix breed dogs of unknown descent.

Cavalier King Charles spaniels were listed as less common in Toowoomba, with only 310 registrations.
