This is the 'Basic Aussie Mum' uniform in 2025

"If I’m in the supermarket struggling with toddlers pulling things off the shelf, and I spot another mum in her Basic Aussie Mum outfit, I’m instantly relieved."

'I didn't know we were wearing pyjamas to work'

Who says being a mum isn’t a real job? We even have a uniform and everything!

Somehow, unofficially, the Mums of Australia have silently agreed that to do our daily tasks well, and look passable while doing so, we need to be wearing what has been dubbed online as the ‘Basic Aussie Mum’ outfit.

You might think we’d be offended, but considering how many women are having fun with the term, I reckon we’re taking it as a compliment!

"Basic Aussie Mum outfit 2025"

In videos mocking the trend online you can see hundreds of comments from mums laughing "okay I love this outfit though"’and "haha not me sitting here feeling called out."

So what’s the Basic Aussie Mum outfit? Thought you’d never ask!

A baggy tee, bike shorts, crocs/sandals or Adidas Sambas, a cap and sunnies and of course the giant cup. Because in 2025 we’re not letting our hydration slip.

Is it weird we’re taking it as a compliment? Considering every second video I see online is of a postpartum mum trying to find her style and then in fact, just finding each-other's style, maybe it is. But who cares!

Motherhood changes you entirely. Your body, your outlook on life, the bar at which you set the standard for ‘tired’.

You spend the first few years trying to put piece yourself back together between feeds, nappy changes and increasingly irritating episodes of Peppa Pig. Some of the pieces slot back together easily, other parts seem to lay on the floor confused, with no clear place of where to put them.

For many, those pieces are body image.

"The mum club doesn't take mean girls"

I have a theory about body image, the digital age and our village.

I don't know if you've noticed, but there is no village. For many of us, no one is coming.

We find our village online in the DM's of instagram or on Mumtok. And if watching Sarah Mum of Two get ready in the morning with her new mermaid tee and pink sambas brings you comfort then yay thank you Sarah!

If you find inspiration online to get yourself ready in the morning, throw on a lick of paint and actually feel good about yourself that’s a massive step in finding yourself on the other side of postpartum.

Honestly, it's modern biology at play. Survival of the fittest! Just like moths need camouflage to hide from birds we need slick back hair and bike shorts.

Our Basic Aussie Mum outfit is our camouflage and war paint, our village approved style. Our uniform to wear while we do groceries and pick up toys and try to figure out who the hell we are now. The comradery that comes with the outfit is strong too!

“I’m so glad I’m not this Aussie Mum” says one online troll. The dozens of Mums that jump to her defence can be summed up with one hero’s retort: “we’re glad you aren’t too honey, the Mum club doesn’t take mean girls’.

You think we’re Basic? Big woop!

You also think being a Mum isn’t work and that our children should neither be seen nor heard when in public. Our uniform helps us not care!

Because if I’m in the supermarket struggling with toddlers pulling things off the shelf and I spot another mum in her Basic Aussie Mum Outfit I’m instantly relieved.

Because I know when I lock eyes with her across the 2 minute noodles she will understand me, and I her.

I will know she’s been up for hours, gone to the toilet with company, made three different breakfasts and done nothing for herself. I’ll know she doesn’t mind because she loves her kids more than she loves herself.

But that she also made her effort this morning because she has her cute uniform on. And there’s nothing basic about that!
