Witch's Broomstick

Materials:

1 large stick (120cm)

40-50 smaller sticks (30cm length)

Gaffer tape

Cord, rope or twine

Method:

  1. Gather approx 15 smaller sticks and attach to the end of the larger stick (your broom handle), using strong gaffer tape. This is the first of three layers of small sticks which will make up the brush end of your broom.
  2. Complete the next two layers of small sticks, securing with more gaffer tape.
  3. Once all three layers are firmly in place, take your cord/rope/twine, and begin to wrap it around the gaffer tape. Continue wrapping until the tape is completely covered.
  4. Secure the end of the cord/rope/twine and your broomstick is ready for flying!

Boot Buckles

Materials:

Gold foam sheet or cardboard

Scissors

Double sided tape

Black shoes/boots

Method:

  1. On the back of your gold foam sheet/ cardboard draw two squares that measure around 5 cm on each side.
  2. Draw a smaller square inside them. This square should measure around 2 cm on each side.
  3. Cut the large squares out.
  4. Cut the centre square out. You should now have two gold buckles!
  5. Stick two pieces of double sided tape to the back of the buckles and attach to the top of your black shoes/boots.

Witch's Hat

Materials:

2 pieces of black cardboard

Scissors

Double sided tape

Black gaffer tape

Twine

Method:

  1. Roll one piece of black cardboard into a cone. Fit the bottom of the cone to your head. Secure in place with double sided tape.
  2. Cut the uneven edge of the cone so it is straight.
  3. Make 2 cm cuts in the bottom of the cone to form outward facing tabs. These will hold up the brim of the witches hat.
  4. Take a piece of twine and cut it so it is the same width as your shoulders. This is the diameter of the hat brim.
  5. Half the piece of twine and place a pencil in the loop. Hold the two ends in your fingers and hold them firmly down at the centre of the second piece of black cardboard. You can now use the pencil to draw a circle on the card.
  6. Cut out the hat brim circle.
  7. Place the cone in the centre of the brim and trace a line around it. Take note that the tabs will be going under the brim, so please make an allowance for this.
  8. Cut the centre hole and place the brim over the cone.
  9. Secure the brim and cone together using black gaffer tape. Now, that is a hat fit for a witch!

Mog the Cat

Materials:

1 black sock

Scarves (for stuffing)

White ribbon

Hot glue gun

Gold foam sheet/ cardboard

Gaffer tape

Black pipe cleaners

Method:

  1. Take your black sock and fill it with the scarf (or other stuffing).
  2. Use some white ribbon to tie around the top of the sock. It should be about 1.4 of the whole sock. This will be Mogs head.
  3. Measure around what will be Mogs body with the rest of the white ribbon and cut 2 or 4 pieces. Secure Mogs white ribbon stripes with a hot glue gun. Make sure you have a grown up around for this!
  4. To make Mogs ears, cut 2 pieces of gaffer tape that are around 6 cm in length. Fold the gaffer tape in half, leaving the bottom open. Stick them on the top of Mogs head. Cut the folded gaffer tap into small triangles.
  5. Take out the gold foam sheet / cardboard and draw two small semi circles with a tiny triangle in the middle of the semi circle. Cut these out and secure them with hot glue so Mog can have eyes to see with! Again, make sure you have adult supervision during this step.
  6. Lastly, Mog needs whiskers! Take 3 black pipe cleaners and twist them together at the centre point. Cut them down to size and make sure you have a grown up stick around (see what I did there?) so we can use one final drop of hot glue. Now you have one very cute and cuddly Mog!

I hope you loved making this costume as much as I did! Tag @kidspot and @stellarperformingarts so we can see your creations!
