Combining music and active lifestyles can be challenging for those who love to run, ride or swim.

Wearing earbuds or headphones can block the surroundings in important circumstances, especially for road cyclists.

Bone conductivity technology delivers a happy medium for those who want to let the outside world in while still listening to their favourite tunes or podcasts.

Mojawa, a Chinese company, has just launched headphones that can handle work and play.

The Run Plus cost about $235 and sit over your ears. The sound is transmitted to your ear canal via bone conductivity ensuring peripheral hearing isn’t impacted. Suitable for the office, running, hiking, cycling, they also work underwater.

As a triathlete, I typically only use earbuds when training indoors, yet the Run Plus has opened the door to music when on the move. While riding on the road it’s vital to maintain awareness of approaching vehicles, using low to mid-volume ensures you always have an ear on traffic activity.

Best of all is the swimming functionality. The continuous laps and black line boredom mean many cut their swimming sessions short, but music can often provide additional motivation.

When immersed the sound quality is impressive, working best with two earplugs in use. Once the headband is place (I used the goggles strap to maintain a comfortable position), the sound quality is clear and strong.

Doesn’t expect booming base or noise-cancelling quality, without earplugs it can sound tinny when running and riding – but it’s impossible to have everything.

Connection via Bluetooth is simple, yet if you want to use without your phone (and connection doesn’t work underwater) files need to be downloaded to the Run Plus.

Most people nowadays use streaming services like Spotify, Apple Music or YouTube, so the process of downloading music for storage creates an additional step. Purchased files were able to be downloaded as M4A files from iTunes and then use conversion software to create MP3s for hardware storage.

Suggested battery life per charge is eight hours, and the Run Plus managed close to that at about half volume. Using 100 per cent volume will drop the operation time to six hours.

Recharging takes about one hour via a USB port while the magnetic attachment ensures easy and fast connection.

Operations are basic yet effective. There is one primary button which is used to turn the Run Plus on and off, as well as skip songs, answer calls or switch between Bluetooth or MP3 storage mode. A touchpad behind the ear controls the volume with swipes up or down … sometimes it doesn’t work while wet so it’s best to adjust before jumping in the water.

There is currently a deal available where buyers can save about $30, click here for details.

The Run Plus will also soon be available on eBay.
