Kmart staff memo announces change coming to all stores from 1 August

Buyer beware - this is the first time the option is being removed.

Top 10 Grocery Shopping Hacks You Need to Know!

Regular Kmart customers may need to think more carefully about their purchases in future as from 1 August 2024, the much-loved retailer will no longer accept 'change of mind' returns - without a receipt.

Previously, customers have been able to return items they decided against at home, by simply providing some identification to prove their identity. Now Kmart staff will need to see your receipts or an official proof of purchase - if you change your mind on needing an item.

The same rule will apply in all Aussie Target stores.

"This option is being removed"

A company memo was released to staff this week that expanded on the nationwide receipt crackdown.

“Previously, stores were able to give customers a change of mind refund without a receipt if proof of identity was provided,” the Kmart memo said.

“However, this option is being removed, and customers will require a receipt.

“From next week a poster will be displayed in stores. However, please remind customers to retain their receipts.”

"Within 60 days of purchase"

The big change does not affect customers who are returning faulty items as they will be able to receive a refund without a receipt.

For any returns to Kmart, all products need to be presented in their original packaging and be in resalable condition. They must be returned within 60 days of purchase or 365 days if customers are a OnePass member.

“In line with most major retailers in Australia, Kmart and Target will be enforcing its returns policy and requiring proof of purchase for ‘change of mind’ returns,” a Kmart and Target spokesperson said.

“We are communicating this change extensively across multiple customer touchpoints to ensure our customers are well-informed ahead of this change coming into effect.” Online receipts, Flybuy statements and Buy Now Pay Later statements will also be accepted.

On a Facebook post, some shoppers were confused that this had ever been the policy, believing receipts were an essential factor when returning items.

"I have never thought of returning something without a receipt"

“I have never thought about returning something without a receipt,” said one.

A second added: “It's always been in place. Just not all stores were enforcing it but now they have too.”

One helpful customer advised taking photos of receipts to have a digital copy in case they misplace their physical ones.

Or you can ensure you have everything linked via the Kmart app, which as one customer suggest, even some staff weren’t aware of.

"Use the app"

“If you have a flybuys or OnePass card link them with your Kmart account, and get the Kmart app you can access all of your receipts for in-store and online purchases in the app, no need to worry about hanging onto the paper receipts.

“A few months ago I returned something to Kmart and the staff member had no idea about receipts being on the app!”
