‘I would never disrespect pancakes this way’

A viral pancake recipe hack has people claiming that “breakfast is ruined forever”.

4 food prep hacks that will save you time

Pancakes are one of those basic recipes that we all know how to make, and we all make pretty much the same.

Sure, the proportions of milk to flour to eggs might differ a bit from recipe to recipe, but basically you’re aiming to make a batter which you pour into a hot, oiled pan, to make a fluffy, perfectly golden breakfast treat.

Add too much butter and too much syrup and a few minutes later you’ll be in a pleasant food coma.

But the internet is the internet, so someone had to come along and spoil everything.

How? They applied the technique of scrambling eggs to making pancakes and the result was sort of weird-looking clumps of golden pancake bits.

It’s not pretty, but we wonder if it’s yummy.

On one hand, with the batter in little chunks, lots of surface area has turned golden and caramelised which is good.

On the other hand, little bits run the risk of turning dry, and they’re definitely not fluffy, which is bad.

TikTok makes scrambled pancakes

The trend is taking off on TikTok, with content creator @archivedchef doing a version that has attracted over 13.7 million views.

“Don’t take this the wrong way, but you’ve been making pancakes wrong your whole life,” the chef said in the TikTok.

The video starts out as expected, with pancake batter being poured into a frying pan.

Immediately things go awry. Before the batter has had a chance to set in a pleasing circular shape, in comes the spatula, stirring and chopping the batter as it comes together.

“It’s much easier this way; you don’t have to worry about getting the perfect circle or whatever,” the voice over continued.

We’ll pause here to say if you just pour the batter in and don’t move around too much, it makes a perfect circle all by itself.

While the chef seemed pretty enthusiastic to try the dish, her daughter wasn't having it. “Of course I had to make my daughter’s usual Mickey Mouse pancake because she refused to try the scrambled pancakes.”

At first the chef said it was delicious, but at the end she changed her tune.

“Psych! Do not try this, it was not good and whoever told me to try this and said it was good may your toes always find their way to the corners of tables [to be stubbed]. Goodbye.”

TikTok hates scrambled pancakes

Followers were not impressed.

“Who hurt you?” one person asked.

“I would never disrespect pancakes this way,” said another.

But some people said the trend was common in Austria, Hungary and Slovenia, while others thought it looked delicious.

“They do this in Austria,” one person said. “It’s called ‘kaiserschmarrn’.”

“OMG every bite is crispy, are you kidding me?” said another. “Genius.”

Others said to take the recipe farther.

“OK but scramble the pancakes and mix with scrambled eggs and breakfast sausage or bacon,” one person suggested.
