‘I will never be carefree again’: Michael Bublé talks about son’s cancer

“I remember saying to myself, if we get out of this, I’m living a different life,” the Canadian musician shared.

When Michael Bublé’s three-year-old son Noah was diagnosed with hepatoblastoma, a rare liver cancer, the now-dad-of-four was crushed.

“My son’s cancer diagnosis rocked my world,” he said this week on the Diary of a CEO podcast.

“… it was a sledgehammer to my reality. It pulled a curtain from my eyes,” he went on, talking about the experience he and his wife Luisana Lopilato faced as they learned their eldest was gravely ill.

He said before Noah’s diagnosis, he was very career- focused. “My family was always important, I love them, I wasn’t a terrible guy, but I had blinders on: career, ambition, how do I become the baddest, biggest, best… more ego, more power, more money.”

But in spite of his ambitions, Michael put it all aside to focus on Noah getting better.

“Luisana and I have put our careers on hold in order to devote all our time and attention to helping Noah get well,” he wrote on social media at the time.

The reality of possibly losing one of his kids shook the singer to his core.

“I will never be carefree again in my life. And that’s OK,” he said on the podcast.

Michael Bublé on how son’s cancer diagnosis changed his life

Noah’s diagnosis was discovered when doctors were investigating what they thought was a case of the mumps. But tests revealed something awful: a rare type of liver cancer.

Although Michael touched on how the diagnosis affected his own life, he said he didn’t want to talk too much about the illness because “Noah has his own story”.

“It’s a privilege to me to exist and that pain, the fear, the suffering that comes with those things. It’s part of that, it’s life.

“The moment they said, this is what’s happening, that reality hit me. Filter gone.

“And I mean in a moment, in one moment, gone. And I went, OK this is life. This is it. This is what’s important. And that’s when… There was no time to process. This is what your priorities must be in order to be happy in your life."

Michael and Luisana have four kids: Noah, 10, Elias, 7, Vida, 5, and Cielo, 1.

“I remember saying to myself, ‘If we get out of this, I’m living a different life, a better life'.

“I want to be kinder, I want to be more empathetic. I don’t ever want to allow that ego and false self to take over. I want to know how lucky I am.”

Noah is now 10 years old and has been in remission for seven years.

Michael and Luisana are also parents to Elias, seven, Vida, five and Cielo, one.
