After experiencing typical symptoms, the Melbourne influencer was struck down with a “random but kind of funny” coronavirus side effect.

Omicron COVID-19 variant: The 'unusual' symptoms to look out for

By now most of us are familiar with the major symptoms of Covid – sore throat, a fever and dry cough.

But as the new Covid variant Omicron spreads across Australia, two Melbourne influencers have shared the unusual side effects they’ve suffered after contracting coronavirus.

Former Miss Universe Australia Olivia Molly Rogers was diagnosed with the virus after spending Christmas with her family in South Australia.

After testing positive on a rapid antigen test and experiencing the typical Covid symptoms, Olivia also began having an unusual side effect.

“I have the most random (but kind of funny) symptom,” she wrote on her Instagram story on Monday.

“I can’t stop burping. I googled it and apparently it’s part of the gastrointestinal symptoms of Covid, not that common though. Has anyone else had this with Covid?”

As well as the burping, Olivia said she had “really itchy eyes”.

Olivia later got her PCR Covid test results which confirmed she had the virus, which she shared on Instagram and joked: “Good to know my consistent burping wasn’t just me being a bit feral.”

Fitness influencer and Keep It Cleaner co-founder Lauren Henshaw also shared her unusual Covid symptom after testing positive.

The model revealed she was suffering from aches in her legs similar to the growing pains she’d experienced as a teenager.

“I have not had any head symptoms (headache or dizziness) so I have spent most of the days reading and journalling outside and taking time to slow down and rest,” Laura wrote in an Instagram post.

“Anyone with achy legs (I felt like I had entered the Olympic squatting competition combined with growing pains), I found putting them up in the air helped a lot.”

While experts believe the Omicron strain of Covid, first discovered by scientists in South Africa in November, is milder than other strains like Delta it still comes with a list of symptoms similar to the flu.

Common early symptoms include:

• Scratchy throat

• Lower back pain

• Runny nose/congestion

• Headache

• Fatigue

• Sneezing

• Night sweats

• Body aches

In the UK, the ZOE Covid Study, which tracks the outbreak with the help of millions of app users, conducted an initial analysis of symptom data from positive cases in London.

The analysis found that the top five symptoms reported were runny nose, headache, fatigue, sneezing and sore throat.

Meanwhile, in the United States the CDC reports the most common symptoms of the Omicron strain are cough, fatigue and congestion.

While less common, frequent burping is a known symptom of coronavirus along with other gastrointestinal issues like acid reflux and indigestion.

Body aches and pains are also a possible symptom of Covid.
