NEW data about junk food’s calorie count and portion size shows that McDonald’s french fries and Krispy Kreme doughnuts have more calories in Australia than in the US.

The research, conducted by ComparetheMarket.com.au, analyses the portion size and calorie count of popular ‘quick eats’ in Australia, Japan, New Zealand, the UK, Germany, Hong Kong, Portugal, Columbia, Singapore, Indonesia, the US and Canada.

It’s a pertinent reminder that even if a meal is smaller in size, it can still have more calories.

Key findings include the fact that Japan has the lightest KFC original recipe burger recipe — it’s 77g lighter than Canada.

Australia has the smallest serving size of McDonald’s fries at 104g but there is an additional 31g with Japan’s medium fries.

The infographics show that a Whopper in Japan weighs 278g and is 750 calories; that’s more calorific than the heavier Whopper offerings from the UK, Australia, USA and Canada.

New Zealand has the least calorific Subway 6” Italian BMT, while Hong Kong’s sub has an additional 88 calories packed in it.

In the beverage game, Australia has the biggest ‘original’ portion of the All Berry Bang smoothie at 610ml. The ‘kids’ size at 350ml has the highest calorie content at 209.
