Revellers continue new year celebrations on Bondi Beach as the sun rises

There will be some sore heads and sandy beds this morning as dozens of revellers continued celebrating well into the morning.

A group of revellers kept their new year celebrations going well into the morning on Sydney’s most famous beach.

Groups of people gathered on Bondi Beach to watch the sunrise for the first time in 2024 on Monday.

The shore was packed with people, some continuing their night while others rose early to get their new year started.

Some were still in high spirits, with many dancing on the sand and one even taking a drink out of a shoe – a beloved Aussie tradition.

Meanwhile, others were a little worse for wear and were captured sleeping off a big night on the sand.

Dozens of brave partygoers chose to dive into the water for an early morning swim despite the temperature at Bondi sitting at 18C throughout the morning.

As the sun rose over the horizon, couples cuddled on the sand.

Groups of partygoers were dancing on the sand, continuing their celebrations well into the morning.

The wild scenes come after thousands of Sydneysiders stepped out in style on Sunday, filling pubs, clubs and streets across the city.

More than 225,000 people crowded into 49 vantage points across the city to watch the iconic midnight fireworks display.

Sydneysiders welcomed 2024 with a stunning extravaganza of colour and light over Sydney Harbour, with the iconic midnight fireworks display erupting over Australia’s global city to mark fresh beginnings.

Thousands crammed into Sydney’s CBD for the iconic show, with the police warning all viewing spots in the city and North Sydney had filled up by the evening.

More than 8.5 tonnes of fireworks were set off as well as 80,000 pyrotechnic effects.

For some, it was a 17-hour wait after queuing from the early hours of the morning to score a good spot.

But as soon as the new year hit, it was all worth it with cheers heard across the city.

Police said the public were largely “well behaved” throughout the festivities with just 19 arrests made, including assault and drug offences.

No arrests have been made yet after an alleged stabbing left three men wounded in Woolloomooloo just after midnight on Monday.

“As people make their way home or continue their celebrations into New Year’s Day, police will continue to maintain a highly visible presence across the state to ensure everyone remains safe,” NSW Police said in a statement.

The New Year’s Eve celebrations featured two firework shows on Sunday night, the eight-minute “family fireworks” at 9pm and a 12-minute display at midnight.

Crowds were urged to get into their viewing position by sunset to ensure they were able to get a spot in time for the show.

Sydney was overcast and cool, hitting a low of 19C on Sunday night. Except for a few passing showers, the rain mostly stayed away.
