An Aussie couple have been left horrified after making a chilling discovery while renovating their new home.
Influencer Shai Howland and her partner thought they had hit the jackpot after scooping up an idyllic farmhouse in South Australia.
Little did they know that their dream property would soon become a nightmare.
The young influencer took to social media to share a viral clip of the moment she discovered her walls were riddled with asbestos while ripping down the old wallpaper.
“And that’s on being non-diligent,” she added, stressing that the pair had “learnt their lesson”.
“Definitely going to be looking into asbestos testing and all the right protection now.”
Commenters were quick to offer their advice, with one writing: “Don’t mess with asbestos. Get out immediately.”
“Put on shoes and gloves and actual clothes when doing house renovations,” added another concerned fan.
Asbestos is a natural mineral made of fibres which is invisible to the naked eye.
It was frequently used in Australian homes before its eventual ban in December 2003, after it was closely linked to serious health conditions such as cancer.
More than 4,000 Australians still die annually from diseases related to asbestos exposure, which can take decades to present.
Howland later revealed that she was “completely oblivious” and that the entire ordeal has left her with a lot of “anxiety about whether [asbestos] has affected her or not.”
Following the scary experience, Howland is hoping to raise awareness about the hidden dangers of asbestos “as it seems a lot of people are completely unaware of what it is.”
