Woolworths has been praised for a random act of kindness after hundreds of people were left without power and forced to restock their fridges.
Chantelle, who runs popular social media page Fat Mum Slim, took to Facebook to share that she had randomly been gifted a $10 voucher while at Woolworths.
She wanted to know if anyone else had scored one, as all she did was pop into her local store and a staff member asked her if she wanted one.
“I said, ‘Nah, no thanks. I don’t like free money. KIDDING! Yes please!’,” she said. “Poor kid thought I was super weird.”
When she asked why she was getting one, the employee said he had no idea and was simply told to hand them out.
“That was unexpected and joyful. Definitely made me smile. Wondering if they were doing it state wide, Australia wide or just in areas affected by the cyclone, maybe,” she said.
A Woolworths spokesperson confirmed to news.com.au that it was indeed because of ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred.
“We understand Cyclone Alfred was a challenging period for our customers,” a Woolworths spokesperson told news.com.au.
“As a small gesture of thanks for their understanding during the disruption in our store operations, some of our stores have been handing out e-Gift Cards to customers over the weekend.”
Other shoppers — predominantly Woolworths customers — shared how they had also been on the receiving end of random acts of kindness in stores.
“I was lucky enough on Christmas Eve, a staff member came and paid for all of my groceries on behalf of Woolworths! Was very nice,” one said.
Another said: “I was at Bunnings last year and they were hiding big plastic eggs in the store. If you found one you got a gift voucher. It was fun to see grown adults doing an Easter egg hunt.”
“It was Christmas Eve, I’d asked a staff member if she could point me in the direction of an item. She took me to where it was and handed me the voucher. I promptly burst into tears,” one recalled.
One added: “Didn’t get one … but that’s okay, I felt like a winner for getting bread.”
“I got one and was so emotional. I was doing the shop to replenish all the food that got spoiled after the cyclone and power outages,” another commented.
“I was ever so grateful after a particularly horrendous start to 2025. The man didn’t realise just how much that little act could mean to me.”
One social media user revealed: “Yes at the check out! I asked why (but very appreciative) and the young girl said her manager just said to hand them out️
“Nice surprise after a very expensive shop to replace all the frozen stuff after the cyclone.”
Another chimed in: “Not long ago they gave hubby a little gift bag full of skin care and stuff with a ribbon on it.”
