If you miss the days when musk sticks were all the rage, we just discovered a margarita with a sweet nostalgic twist that could be just what your next gathering needs.

Created by recipe developer Tiffany Page, this vibrant pink drink is not only a sight to behold, but it also tastes exactly like a boozy version of your favourite childhood lolly (and it’ll be the talk of any retro-themed party – or any party, for that matter).

If you grew up in the 80s or 90s and love a bit of food nostalgia, you can now turn the love-it-or-loathe-it lolly into something a little bit more fancy that’s just for adults.

So what does the Musk Sticks margarita taste like?

Taste’s digital editor Rebecca served this pink margi at an 80s-themed party recently, and her guests were beyond intrigued.

She says: “All my friends made a beeline for this as soon as they arrived. Not only is it eye-catchingly vibrant but it tastes delicious, too. I doubled the recipe and it made each of my 20 guests one welcome drink, but everyone wanted a second!”

Fellow recipe tester Sonya adds: “Having grown up loving the sweet, perfumed flavour of musk sticks (still my go-to lolly of choice at any birthday party!), this grown-up liquid version is a nostalgic delight. Plus, the pastel hue of these pretty-in-pink drinks looks striking on a cocktail party tabletop.”

Once the musk sticks and tequila have worked their magic, you simply mix it with rose liqueur – we use Alize which can be found in most bottle shops – and lime juice.

Although a classic margarita would usually be served with a salt rim on the glass, we actually use a combination of sugar and salt on this one, which complements the sweetness of the musk sticks perfectly.

What is a classic margarita made of?

A classic margarita is made from tequila, lime juice and triple sec (eg. Cointreau). Most people also add salt to the rim but you sometimes see people getting much more creative with herbs and chilli or jalapenos for added spice. In our opinion, ice is always essential – or you can even turn it into a slushie.

What is the ratio of tequila to margarita mix?

Generally, a classic margarita is made up of three parts tequila, three parts triple sec and one part lime juice.
