‘How?’: 28yo loses it over ‘measly’ $14 brekkie

It’s no secret that Australia is in the midst of a cost of living crisis but one influencer has been appalled by the cost and quality of her cafe breakfast.

A Sydney influencer revealed she was charged almost $14 for a simple cafe takeaway breakfast — and many backed up her frustration.

Nikki Potter said she was dogsitting in Sydney’s northern beaches and went to a local cafe as she didn’t know the area particularly well.

But Nikki was left shocked at the price and size of a small coffee and Vegemite on toast, which set her back $13.90, and took to social media to ask if she had a “right” to be annoyed by it.

“I order Vegemite on sourdough and a small, soy flat white,” she said.

“And in the city that would normally cost around $10 or maybe $11. It cost me $13.90.”

She then showed the size of her coffee, which she claimed was an extra small as she “knew what a small coffee looked like” and claimed what she got wasn’t it.

She then said she was given the butter and Vegemite in separate containers so she could spread it herself, which she understood as everyone has different rations, but she wasn’t given a knife to do it with.

“What really annoyed me, I was like ‘I get it, okay, people are very subjective about Vegemite, it’s fine,” she said.

“What has really bothered me is this. This absolutely measly baby little piece of bread that’s clearly like the dregs of the loaf.”

She was holding up two pieces of bread, with one almost double the size of the other.

“They are laughing their heads off that they managed to get away with giving me that. That’s annoyed me,” she said.

Social media users were equally unimpressed with what Nikki was given.

“The audacity of that tiny toast! But also who is ordering Vegemite toast takeaway,” one social media user said.

Another added: “The no knife is criminal.”

“People need to start speaking up. Take it back,” one added.

One said: “Sounds like the type of cafe to not visit again.”

One social media user revealed that they recently paid $17 for a ham and cheese croissant and small coffee.

It comes after another influencer paid $40 for a takeaway sandwich from a Perth cafe that featured sliced tomato, smashed avocado, and eggplant between two pieces of bread; while the other was two slices of toast with smashed avocado on the side.

“I’m not even going to say anything, but I ordered smashed avo. I ordered smashed avo, and that is exactly what I got,” she began.

“I’m trying not to laugh. I got a vegan eggplant sandwich. I paid $40, guys. $40. I’m just going to leave it at that. Maybe it tastes amazing.”

Mea’s video, which has been viewed more than 151,000 times, drummed up more than 600 comments – the overriding sentiment of which being Mea was the one at fault for forking out the money on breakfast in the first place.

“$40 for a sandwich. Why did you buy it?” one user questioned.

“Did you not see the price before ordering?” another asked.

To which Mea responded: “The heartbreaking part was that this was my favourite brekkie spot of FIVE YEARS and they had just changed owners and what I was served compared to before was shocking to say the least haha.”
