Sizzler cheese bread recipe

It looks and tastes JUST like you remember it.

Air fryer Sizzler-style cheese toast
Sizzler, RIP. With its all-you-can eat buffet and soft serve bar with ALL of the things, it’s safe to say it was an Aussie institution. Ever since they closed the doors of their final remaining restaurants, we have been missing their most classic dishes (hello, stodgy spag bol and prawn cutlets that we were never allowed to order).

In particular, we’ve been craving their ridiculously addictive cheese bread, so there was only one solution: setting our foodies the task of recreating it. Which they did. IN AN AIR FRYER.

Our food editor Alison Adams was the legend who took on the challenge. She discovered that there were two secrets to the iconic side dish: 1) super-thick, super-soft white bread and 2) a paste made from a combination of margarine and cheese.

As you can see, it looks just like the original, but we can confirm that it tastes just like it too. In fact, because it’s cooked in the air fryer it’s even crispier on the outside.

Alison says it was a cinch to make. “The softness of the margarine meant that it was easy to combine with the cheese,” she reveals. “It turned out crispy, cheesy and slightly salty… And with no frying pan to wash up!”

Homemade Sizzler cheese toast: the reviews

So, what do Aussies think of our Sizzler cheese toast dupe? The feedback is overwhelmingly positive. Not only does the video go viral across all our social channels whenever it’s posted, but it gets a 4.3 out of 5 star rating too.

How to make it if you don’t have an air fryer

Although this recipe is intended for cooking in an air fryer, it’s possible to make it without. While we haven’t tested this method, it is expected to work. You may choose to cook it either in the oven at 240C/220C for 3-4 minutes or under a preheated medium-high grill for 1-2 minutes.

Sizzler’s best dishes, ranked

When Sizzler first announced it would be shutting up shop for good, we decided to rank all their menu items, from the worst to the very best. Unsurprisingly, cheese toast took out the number one spot.

So now, we can forget the lukewarm soup, bacon bits and menu items that we were never allowed to order… But cheesy toast will live on forever.
