A popular Mexican chain has responded after a customer’s burrito complaint went viral – causing a bitter divide among Aussies.
Zara took to social media with a plea for Guzman y Gomez after ordering a burrito with “extra guac” and claiming she found half an avocado inside the wrap.
But while she asked GYG to “please explain” what had occurred, stating the discovery “ruined” her evening, many claimed there were things about her ordeal that didn’t make sense.
Even GYG were confused by Zara’s burrito find, telling news.com.au there were “several inconsistencies in the product” that roused suspicions.
“Whilst it’s extremely unlikely that a half avocado was placed in a burrito, there is a small possibility as GYG’s cooks mash whole fresh avocados by hand every day to make our guacamole,” the spokesperson said.
“Half an avocado would have to pass through a number of checks prior to getting into a burrito so this is very unlikely.
“We always encourage guests to contact us directly as we are able review the product being made and ensure that procedures were followed. There are several inconsistencies in the product that we would also be inclined to check before validating the video.”
However, Zara has doubled down on social media, clapping back at commenters who point out details they feel don’t add up.
GYG, and many others, noted none of the avocado-half had been consumed, despite the fact a lot of the burrito had been eaten.
“The no bite on the avo is wild,” the brand wrote on the TikTok video.
“I’m confused how you’ve eaten more burrito without eating the avocado?” one agreed.
As one claimed: “You made that yourself.”
Zara insists she “absolutely did not put it in there”, adding she had “witnesses who can say the same thing”.
But it has done little to quell the doubters, many of whom claim to be GYG employees who have flooded the comments section.
“Bro you literally just put that in there, I work at GYG and I know how guac in a burrito works,” one stated.
“As a gyg worker u put that in there,” another agreed.
But there were some who supported Zara, stating they had a similar experience with the avocado in their orders recently.
“No cause this happened to me the other day and it was hard as like I couldn’t Bite through it,” one said.
“It’s because avos are out of season atm and all our avos are coming in extremely under ripe and it’s super difficult to mash the guac,” another worker explained.
While one added: “OMG this literally happened to me today but smaller diced.”
Some were so pressed by the issue, they shared their own videos discussing the topic, declaring whose side they were on.
Some saw the positive side of the alleged experience, pointing out avocados are “expensive”.
“That’s $2 right there,” remarked one.
“Least u know the avos they use are real and not some processed fake food,” said another.
But Zara remained firm, writing: “They could at least mash it so it’s edible.”
News.com.au has contacted Zara for further comment.
