Aldi partners with ‘world’s best chocolate’ brand to launch $4 bar

The supermarket giant has unveiled an incredible new product that costs just $4 and is the first of its kind in Australia.

'World's best chocolate' hits Aussie supermarkets

Aldi has partnered with the “world’s best chocolate” to create three new blocks that are “a lot cheaper” than the cult-version.

The budget supermarket recently joined Tony’s Open Chain, an initiative created by confectionary brand Tony’s Chocolonely with the aim of “ending exploitation in the cocoa industry”.

The Dutch chocolate maker is famed for its “delicious” range of chocolates that are ethically made and fairly priced as part of the brand’s ongoing commitment to “lifting cocoa farmers out of poverty”.

Aldi is Australia’s first supermarket to join Tony’s mission to “transform the chocolate industry”, releasing a new chocolate range made with cocoa beans sourced through the initative’s “5 Sourcing Principles”.

The Choceur CHOCO CHANGER is a collection of three new responsibly sourced blocks of the supermarket’s own-brand chocolate being sold in Australia and at Aldi supermarkets in countries across Europe, the UK, and the US.

While the new sweet treats are good news for the industry, which has a dark history of child exploitation, shoppers have also been left impressed by the price-tag.

Since hitting shelves on Wednesday, social media has been flooded with posts and videos from food fans, many comparing Aldi’s $3.99 blocks to Tony’s Chocolonely bars which retail for $8 at Coles and Woolworths.

“Aldi has released Tony’s Chocolonely dupes, they’ve actually teamed up with them and they’re a lot cheaper than the normal bars,” Melbourne food blogger Nectorious Papi told his 60,000 TikTok followers.

“There are three flavours, Dark Salty Fudge Almond, Milk Honeycomb Nougat and Milk Salted Caramel Brownie.

“I’m most interested in the Salted Caramel Brownie... this is delicious. It’s beautiful milk chocolate, it’s silky and creamy, it’s quite salty but in a good way and then it’s got the brownie bits going through

“It definitely doesn’t lack quality.”

Another person declared the new range “tasty AF” online, while someone else simply said: “It’s so good.”

Aldi Australia said it was “proud to be a mission ally of Tony’s Open Chain” and said shoppers had been quick to get on board with the new $4 product.

“Shoppers have been very supportive of our deliciously responsible snacks available with the new Choceur CHOCO CHANGER range,” a spokesperson told news.com.au.

“Made with 100 per cent responsibly sourced cocoa and featuring three exciting flavours exclusive to ALDI, these sweet treats are the ultimate indulgence that combine taste and sustainability.”

The supermarket said that while it is early days, there already appeared to be a “crowd favourite” with Aussie shoppers, the Milk Salted Caramel Brownie flavour.

“These sound so good, I can’t wait to try,” one commented on TikTok.

“Wow, I will definitely buy next time I’m in Aldi,” another shared.

Tony’s Chocolonely bars launched 13 years ago in the Netherlands, but only became available to buy in Australia in early 2023.

It was founded by three journalists from the Dutch TV show ‘Keuringdienst van Waarde’ after they discovered that the world’s largest chocolate manufacturers were buying cocoa from plantations that used illegal child labour and modern slavery.

The B-Corp and Fairtrade certified company not only makes chocolate that is 100 per cent slave free – it also wants to help other chocolate makers ensure its products are also free of child exploitation too.
