Timothée Chalamet is ready to retire whatever Greta Gerwig-flavoured idea you have of him. He announced as much when he landed in Tokyo earlier this week, strutting through Narita airport in an Avellano coat so latexed you could practically hear it squeaking. It was Neo from The Matrix wearing Kylie Jenner’s Khy—talk about a way to indirectly spruik your girlfriend’s wares. Most of all it was funereal; black is cool, but also exequial. Here lies Timmy C, patron saint of soft boys and manic pixie dream men.
The Chalamet that does live, though? He wears Jacques Marie Mage and Loewe on the plane, and has a taste for Haider Ackermann jumpsuits. They’re multi-thousand dollar labels which might not make cameos in your closet, but the 27-year-old’s no everyman; he’s a bona fide movie star. Now, as he does the press rounds for Wonka, that message couldn’t be clearer. It was heralded in aforementioned Avellano, and then in lilac Prada at Wonka’s Japanese premiere. Go onto his Instagram page and there he is, staring you down like a bullish stick of grape Laffy Taffy. On his feet, white boots with a bulbous toe—call it clown couture.
As the Wonka promotional circuit rolls on, expect many more looks of this strain: purple, the preferred shade of chocolatiers and their victims (poor, poor Violet Beauregarde), and unabashedly campy. This is, after all, a tap-dancing musical about a confectionery entrepreneur and his army of shrunken orange men—one of them being Hugh Grant. In that regard, Chalamet’s just getting into the spirit.
