Samantha Jones is back! Here’s what we hope she’ll be wearing

It’s finally happened, Samantha Jones, PR, our ‘try-sexual (“I’ll try anything once”), no nonsense, maximalist queen is returning to the Sex and the City reboot, And Just Like That...

Honestly, couldn’t you just drink a Cosmopolitan in celebration!

Rumour is it’s just a cameo, for a single scene, and she won’t be interacting with any of her former cast mates—the much reported rift between Kim Cattrall and Sarah Jessica Parker runs deep and honestly, respect to powerful women who hold their boundaries.

Still. This tiny compromise feels significant—Cattrall has said in the past that she had little interest in watching the reboot, let alone appearing in it. In an interview with Variety asked Cattrall to comment on comments from Sarah Jessica Parker who said that too much drama had happened for Cattrall to return to the series. “Well, it would never happen anyway. So nobody has to worry about that.”

And yet here we. A glimmer of archival Thierry Mugler power shoulder on the horizon. Especially when you consider that the original Sex and the City costume designer, the legendary Patricia Field, is on the hook to dress the inimitable Samantha Jones.

Which can only mean one thing, the outfits are going to be fabulous.

What’s more, given the reboot has, blessedly, stayed relatively true to Charlotte, Miranda and Carrie’s personal style as they enter their 50s and grapple with the social and technological mores of today’s age, we’re sure to expect the same from Samantha Jones.

For all the criticisms the show has attracted, that it was trying a little too hard to right its less than ‘woke’ past, that it was a little drab, that Miranda didn’t listen to podcasts (please), Carrie still gets about a New York bodega in a tulle gown. She was photographed on-set for the second season carrying the cult JW Anderson Pigeon bag. She still experiments and has fun with fashion in her 50s—and is as vital and kooky as ever. No drab waterfall cardigans and sensible flats here, and thank goodness for that.

This, along with another Darren Star-helmed show, Emily in Paris, with the slinky Sylvie, played by Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu, 60, dazzling in sexy low-cut silk shirts and that bikini is an important reminder to ignore women over 50 at your peril. Also, don’t you think a show starring Sylvie and Samantha Jones would be the ultimate crossover—though is Paris/New York big enough?!

So it makes sense, nay it must, that Samantha Jones would be as magnetic and daring and sexy as she ever was. Nobody knew how to belt in a statement blazer, a plunging metallic halter dress or work shoulder grazing earrings quite like her.

Some of her best looks in the shows and the movies (which are not canon but will be included for fashion’s sake) included the canary yellow vintage Mugler blazer she wore in the first movie to a jewellery auction, the leopard print coat she wore to a baseball game in the first season and the strappy dress and gold jewellery she wore in the ‘Politically Erect’ episode of Sex And The City. She dressed to impress (and er, other things), sure, but she also dressed for herself. As she once famously said, "If I worried what every b*tch in New York was saying about me, I'd never leave the house.”

Which is why it’s so much fun to think about what Samantha Jones would wear now, a few years on, now that she’d absolutely give even fewer damns what people think.

I’m thinking one of Daniel Roseberry’s subversive ‘nipple’ blazers for Schiaparelli or Mugler’s catsuits! A Versace power blazer and Etro leopard print trousers? Couldn’t you just see her in one of Loewe’s erm, suggestive, anthurium adorned dresses!

And when at home wafting about in LL Double J power print caftans and huge Irene Neuwirth tropical flower earrings and a Bulgari Serpenti watch.

As my fashion brainbox colleague, assistant fashion features and news editor Jonah Waterhouse, noted when asked what he thought Samantha Jones would wear now, she’d hate the current mode for ‘wearable’ fashion.

His pick?

“This coat from Balenciaga autumn/winter '23/'24 ticks all of Samantha's sartorial boxes—sharp shoulders and fur (albeit, thankfully faux for 2023), radiating the kind of dominance we'd expect from her while roaming the streets of NYC. A black Hermès Birkin would add a little more of the bold-faced opulence she's known for—we can all agree Samantha would detest 'quiet luxury',” he says.

He thinks she’d have been putting her orders in from the most recent Versace show in Los Angeles (front row, of course) and that Anthony Vaccarello’s suiting is tailor made for her.

“Samantha Jones and power suiting are inextricably linked. I have no doubt she'd be extensively fawning over Anthony Vaccarello's broad-shouldered Saint Laurent tailoring—the Samantha that lives eternally in my mind owns several versions of this white blazer from autumn/winter '23/'24,” he says.

Mahalia Chang, head of digital content and growth at Vogue and GQ Australia also sees Samantha Jones as a Balenciaga woman.

“After seeing Isabelle Huppert rocking a Balenciaga gown at Cannes in her 70s (!), I realised Balenciaga would be an amazing fit for Sam in her 60s. Maybe she could be wearing this fabulous coat over one of her iconic bodycon moments?”

And she agrees Versace is perfect for her also—especially Dua Lipa’s collaboration (remember when Samantha turned up to the movie in the same dress as the 20-something star and rocked it better!)

“Samantha is the perfect Versace woman to me—strong, sexy and not afraid to go all out. How good would she look in this opening look from Versace's pre-fall collection, co-designed by Dua Lipa? I'm imagining her taking calls for her PR firm while wearing a killer pointed pump.”

Ultimately, what we all really want to see is more Samantha Jones, hopefully still loving herself more than anyone else and wearing exactly what she pleases.
