Ah, the soft launch. The pivotal way to subtly introduce your significant other to your social media followers—and football heartthrobs Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis have potentially perfected the way to drop the chillest engagement post ever. In October, an Instagram post from the the Gotham FC midfielder featured her wearing a blinding diamond rock on her left hand, as well as a sneaky shot at the end of Mewis and Kerr holding hands. Then, there’s the caption: “Some old and some new.”

The bride wore a feather skirt and a corset for her colourful, three-day wedding in Seville

Needless to say, the comments under the post are anything but chill. “It’s blinding,” one reads. “Casual engagement drop,” writes another. Seems like everyone wants a save-the-date for the Royal Wedding of women’s football.

Now, the news has been officially confirmed, with both Kerr and Mewis sharing photos of Kerr on one knee, and Mewis saying a jubilant yes. The ring itself is a classic silhouette: an oval-cut white diamond, sitting on a gold band.  The couple also confirmed the news to People Magazine, with Mewis stating that her fiancée is her "biggest supporter, always listening to me nag and complain all, all of my crazy antics".

Of course, eagle-eyed fans speculate that the rock on Mewis’s finger actually appeared as early as September, right after the 2023 World Cup in a EA Sports promotion on Gotham FC’s Instagram.

Mewis and Kerr have been in a public relationship since the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, when the Matildas won 4-3 over the USWNT and the Matildas’ team captain was seen consoling Mewis on the pitch after the game. A week later, it was Instagram official.

In the Matildas’ docuseries released early this year, Mewis appeared briefly to speak about her girlfriend. “She’s my best friend,” she said. “I want to do everything with her.”

"Sam is very funny. She makes me laugh always. As a person, as a teammate, as a leader, she's kind of like the whole package.”

After the US exited the World Cup tournament, Mewis followed Kerr around the country, supporting her girlfriend from the stands. And although the two are professional footballers, they don’t bring their work home. Instead, Kerr told Snacks podcast that her favourite thing about Mewis is “how much fun we have together”.

“Like we are literally just the biggest goofballs and we have the most fun ever.”

The world of women’s football is no stranger to relationship rumours and cute Instagram posts, especially in the aftermath of the 2023 Women’s World Cup. Kerr’s Australian teammate, Ellie Carpenter, competed against her partner Danielle van de Donk on the world stage, while Aussie goaltender Mackenzie Arnold is dating her West Ham teammate, Kirsty Smith.

Matildas defender Steph Catley described to Vogue Australia how football has the ability to bring people closer together.

“Spending that amount of time with people who share a common goal, share a common love and passion for the same thing… it makes being in the environment very, very special.”

Maybe this post from Mewis was exactly the statement of common love we were looking for.
