Everything we know about the ‘Freaky Friday’ sequel

Everyone’s favourite chaotic mother-daughter duo is coming back.

Everyone’s favourite chaotic mother-daughter duo is coming back.

It was almost a year ago that we got word that a sequel to the early naughties body-swap mother-daughter comedy Freaky Friday  was being set in motion—news that lovers of the cult-classic level film had been impatiently waiting to hear for over 20 years. Both the films iconic main stars, Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis, have confirmed to be more than happy to reprise their roles if the sequel goes forward as the chaotic duo who wake up one Friday to find that they've swapped bodies, to continue the heartwarming and wild story that is the modern mother and daughter relationship.

With the SAG-AFTRA strike having put a hold on most major productions, word on the new film has been relatively quiet since the confirmation of talks in May last year. But now that the ban has lifted, fans got the Freaky Friday taste they needed when Curtis and Lohan posted a photo together on Instagram last Friday—a fitting day to post that certainly wasn’t coincidental. “Too late. YOU GREW UP and SO BEAUTIFULLY,” Curtis captioned the charming selfie. “Well, it’s Friday, and the strike is over so hopefully, we can switch places again in the near future!”.

Now that we can rest assured that both Lohan and Curtis are committed to a sequel, here’s everything we know about the potential film.

When will the film be released?

As the actor’s strike only now lifts, production schedules and release dates of all the motion pictures that were put on hold are only now being determined. So while we can’t know definitively at this stage when we’ll be seeing a Freaky Friday 2 hit our screens, based on the confirmation we got in early 2022, we can hopefully wager that we’ll be getting something in the next year or two.

Which original cast members will be returning?

For now, all we know for certain is that Lohan and Curtis are locked in—which, lets face it, were always going to be the most important reprisals. But that doesn’t mean fans aren’t going to be lobbying for certain other familiar faces. Chad Michael Murray making a return as Lohan’s love interest is up there with one of the most highly anticipated roles, as well as Mark Harmon as Curtis’ husband, whom she married at the end of the first Freaky Friday film. In an interview last year, Curtis made mention of how she’d love to see her character and Harmon’s still happily married in a sequel, so if that’s anything to go off, we can feel confident in his likely return.

Fans would no doubt also love to see Ryan Malgarini return as Lohan’s younger, sweet yet infuriating brother, all grown up, as well as Lohan’s friends and fellow band members of Pink Slip—possibly the coolest fictional band in the history of cinema. But as to whether these cast members will actually take up their old roles again, we’ll have to wait and see.

What will the plot be about?

While there’s been no official news about what journey Lohan and Curtis will take this time as mother and daughter—would another body-swap be too predictable? Or is that exactly what we’re after?—there is plenty we can speculate on. In the same aforementioned interview, Curtis expressed her desire at having a story that follows Lohan and Curtis, and Lohan’s characters kids. “Let me be the grandma, let me be the old grandma who switches places, so then Lindsay gets to be the sexy grandma who’s still happy with Mark Harmon in all the ways you would be happy with Mark Harmon,” Curtis exclaimed.

If Curtis’ desire comes to life, we’d definitely be seeing another Lohan and Curtis swap. But other fans have suggested they’d like to see some of the other characters swap bodies, like Lohan’s kids and their uncle, or Chad Michael Murray and Mark Harmon’s characters. Either way, we’re sure to see some magical body swapping action once again.
