What does a wedding dress look like? These days, answering the question requires more labour than it used to. The traditional amongst us will describe a uniform vision: a high neck, perhaps, and an A-line skirt, textured on the bodice with Chantilly lace. But in the new millennium, an increasing number of brides are opting for unorthodox silhouettes and shades. Champagne, petal pinks and golds are now in favour. And where dresses remain white, and big, and poofy, they’re finished with details that speak to a more contemporary sensibility.
Unsurprisingly, labels that specialise in designs like these have become highly sought after by the fashion set. Industry cool girls have spent the last few years flocking to under-the-radar ateliers, buying off-the-rack and bespoke designs from rising bridal stars like Danielle Frankel and Wed, or ready-to-wear radicals like Acne Studios and Maison Margiela. Some are hyper-feminine, adorned with creamy ribbons and buoyed by meringue chiffon; others are tinged with a gothic edge—the moodiness of crimson silk, or a black ruffle.
