Clever clogs: Crocs are the hot ticket item, selling out as soon as they are in stock

Love or hate them, Crocs are all the rage for footwear – with some stores saying they just can’t keep the clog in stock.

Croc shoes obsession

Crocs – the shoe, not the animal – have proven to be a hot ticket item in recent times, with some high street stores saying they sell out within moments of them coming in stock.

Assistant store manager of Platypus Shoes in Rundle Mall Brett Hargreaves said Crocs outsell best-selling sneakers from Adidas, Nike and ASICS.

“Specifically the white and black ones we never have enough stock of,” he said.

“Generally once we get a stock drop of them we see half of them sell straight away.”

Mr Hargreaves said the latest limited Crocs collaboration with McDonald’s didn’t arrive at their store due to being in high demand.

Other limited Crocs collaborations such as the Cars Lightening McQueen and Shrek clogs, are on eBay for upwards of $200.

Mr Hargreaves also said since the stores have been getting more and more of the colours in stock, the shoes have been their bestsellers every week.

“They are something that we basically cannot every get enough of, especially once we get the toddler ones in stock as well, they sell so quickly,” Mr Hargreaves said.

“All ages are buying them as a comfort shoe or they’re buying them as a present. Essentially all walks of life are grabbing them while they can.”

The Croc trend is nationwide, with Mr Hargreaves saying they are a bestseller for the company overall.

“As a company in general, I would assume they’re probably the top seller. Even when we get really popular sneakers in, Crocs still out-do them,” he said.

A spokesperson from eBay Australia said the shoe has surged in popularity on the site.

“What began as a nod to comfort and practicality has turned into a fully-fledged style revolution thanks to how Crocs channel fun and creativity through unique and surprising releases,” they said.

“As Crocs redefine fashion norms, Aussies are flocking to eBay Australia to sport this trend and express their personal style.”

Seven-year-old Yiyi and her mum Aly Zhang, of St Mary’s, are crackers for Crocs, saying they have multiple pairs at home.

“We love them because they are comfortable, you can wear them anywhere,” Ms Zhang said.

“You can wear them to the beach and then go shopping after, they are just very wide and easy to walk in.”

Yiyi’s preferred colour is pink, and she has two pink pairs of Crocs.

“My favourite ones are the pink ones, they are so comfortable and I like them as they don’t have any shoelaces,” she said.

North Haven mum Chantelle Wood said she has tried everything to secure her one year old some Crocs but is still waiting on them to be in stock.

“They’re sold out everywhere on Amazon, the Crocs website, Anaconda, City Beach,” she said.

“I looked in store at Trybe Marion which usually sells them but they had none … even Myer is sold out.

“I think TikTok is a big influencer. Plenty of mums rush to the shops and buy something because lots of people are posting about it.”

Away from being best-selling shoes among all ages, Crocs actually can save lives.

In 2016, Vicki Smith suffered an electric shock from a faulty power outlet and a doctor told her she was saved by the rubber soles from the Crocs she was wearing.

“The doctor said if I didn’t have the Crocs on, I wouldn’t be here because it was a fair jolt,” she told The Advertiser in October.
