“Our appetite is gone”

Aussie mum Nicole Kastner has taken to Facebook, sharing a disturbing find in the Australian School Mums group.

“We’ve just gone to open an Easter egg - I’ve never seen this before,” she said in the post.

“It’s not expired and our appetite is gone.”

Along with a post is a photo of the Easter egg which is terrifying to say the least. The discolouration has formed in exact circles, and yeah, I wouldn’t be eating it either.

"Like many families, we tend to have a surplus of Easter eggs hanging around the house after the festivities. They often end up as our go-to dessert until they’re all eaten," Nicole told Kidspot.

"This year, though, the boys unwrapped one only to immediately lose their appetite – the egg looked like a mouldy mess."

“It’s from the heat!”

Commenters on the post were horrified at the photo.

“I’m printing this photo and sticking it on the fridge. Will sure cure the snack attack cravings,” said one commenter.

“Trypophobia triggered,” said another.

“Yuk!” a third said simply.

But, despite its appearance, others were quick to confirm that the circles weren’t necessarily caused by mould, but were rather as a result of blooming.

“It’s from the heat my kids were given some Easter eggs and opened them and they were like this,” said one commenter.

“It would’ve been melted and then solidified again,” another agreed.

“So it is called blooming. It’s where the chocolate gets really hot and loses its temper and then gets cold again. It’s the sugar in the chocolate,” said a third.

“It just got warm and partly melted is all..... standard in qld lol. Its a lucky day if your chocolate doesnt look like this lol,” another person added.

“Please don’t eat that!”

And, while given the circumstances the chocolate could technically be safe to eat, a number of commenters said that they wouldn’t be risking it.

“All I see it's holes omg hahaa I'd chuck it and cry in the corner haha,” one person said.

“Pretty sure you can eat it but it won’t taste anywhere near as good. It’s where it’s gotten hot and cold too many times,” another added.

“Safe... but just to be sure - please don't eat that,” another person pleaded.

Nicole confirmed to Kidspot that this is the route she ended up taking - just to be on the safe side.

"The responses [on Facebook] were a mix of horror and fascination," she said.

"Some suggested tossing it, while others educated me on the concept of chocolate fat bloom. Apparently, this happens when chocolate is stored at the wrong temperature and the cocoa butter separates. My favourite suggestion was to take a photo of the egg and stick it on the fridge to curb any snack cravings – great idea, but we went with the first option: straight to the bin.

"Since then, none of us have been reaching for any more chocolate eggs after dinner (any takers for the surplus we still have?).

"My advice to others: check the temperature where you're storing your eggs (especially if you're hiding them before Easter!) and always give them a quick squizz (and taste test, if needed obviously) before handing them to the kids. And if you do end up with a funky-looking egg, don’t panic! It might just be a bloomed beauty – while it may not look perfect, it could be perfectly edible, if you’re brave enough. Just don’t expect it to be the Instagram-worthy shot you were hoping for!"
