"BYO water next time if you can’t afford it," she was told.

People can't agree on the flavour of coke

An Aussie woman has taken to social media to express her outrage after being charged an eye-watering price for a mini can of Coke at a Bondi Beach cafe.

The incident, shared in the Bondi Local Loop Facebook group, has sparked debate among locals and visitors alike, with many locals actually defending the steep price tag.

You paid how much for a can of coke?!

"Jesus wept! What on earth is going on?! This is unbelievable… take away kiosk and not even a proper full-size can of Coke!" the woman wrote.

The receipt, which she attached to her post, shows that the establishment in question is Promenade Bondi Beach, an upscale restaurant just metres from the sand.

The venue, which also includes an outdoor takeaway kiosk and bar, is part of The Bondi Pavillion complex, which underwent a multimillion-dollar restoration and re-opened in 2023.

According to the receipt, the woman paid $6.60 for a takeaway 250mL mini can of Coke and $9.35 for a 300mL bottle of juice.

Her total bill for the two drinks came to $15.95, with an additional 'handling fee' of $0.24, bringing the final amount to $16.19.

"BYO water next time if you can't afford it"

The post quickly went viral, with over 200 comments flooding in.

"You are sitting at a seat that a restaurant can be making money from. Consider a seat as rented space. Someone ELSE could be there if you aren't. It's not them being rude. It's their income," one commenter said.

To which the author of the post replied, "It was at a takeaway kiosk... There was no seat at the kiosk."

Another chimed in, "You’re the clown happy enough to buy it," while someone else added, "Stay home - they didn’t ask you to buy it."

One other person suggested, "BYO water next time if you can’t afford it."

"Check the menu before, and you won’t complain later," another commented.

However, others expressed a little more understanding.

"Welcome to the Eastern Suburbs, you’ll pay $6+ for a terrible coffee," one said.

"Daylight robbery," someone else claimed.

And several users were more blunt in their criticism.

"Totally abusive," said one. "How can they get away with that?"

Then another called it a "total rip-off of a place" and added, "I know the rent is high, but that is just pure greed."
