Customers of a German supermarket chain has complained about a $7 container of precut fruit.

Aldi customers posted a photo to Facebook of new precut watermelon containers at the supermarket, that weigh 850 grams and sell for $6.99.

However, customers had mixed reactions with some praising the item for those with dexterity issues, while others slammed it due to the price and the excess plastic packaging.

The customer who initially uploaded the photo praised it as “good different”.

But others disagreed.

One social media user commented on the watermelon photo: “Bit of a set back towards their plastic reduction target.”

“Very pricey though,” another said.

One added: “No thanks for bloody plastic.”

Another added: “$6.99 … wow! If it were cheaper I would buy it to save wastage from buying a bigger piece.”

However, some argued the product was vital for those who have a disability or dexterity issues, or just general on-the-go convenience.

One former aged care worker said: “I found these kind of foods handy when I worked in aged care and disability.

“I couldn’t take lunches with me because I’d be out driving in and out of people’s houses and a lunch box with ice didn’t hold up.”

Another added: “Some of us have fingers with arthritis and significant pain.

“Two years ago I would have easily cut a whole melon but these days I struggle with anything to do with my hands.

“At 59 yrs it’s hard to accept and it looks like many of you would look at me buying this and thinking I was lazy.”

An Aldi spokesperson told news.com.au that, despite concerns, the plastic is recyclable.

“We have a strong and proven commitment to reducing plastics in our stores as evidenced through our Plastics and Packaging Progress Report with an ambition to reduce plastic packaging by 25 per cent by 2025,” the spokesperson said.

“With fresh produce, especially produce that has been prepared for convenience, there are not always suitable plastic-free packaging options, however the container and lid of the freshly cut watermelon are recyclable in a customer’s kerbside recycling bin.”
