It’s a well-known fact that reptiles are cold blooded, but this one adventurous, shivery snake has really taken it to a whole new level.

On Friday, January 12, Adelaide Hills Snake Catcher, Simon Hemeel said he got a memorable first in his 25 year snake-catching career when he was called to capture a snake slithering out of an ice dispenser in a fridge.

Stunning footage of the snake capture is making the rounds on social media and Mr Hemeel believed the red belly black snake was chasing prey and not stopping off for a sneaky Friday knock off by the fridge.

“I think what’s happened is the snake was in the pergola area, and I think a frog or a gecko has crawled up the fridge for a drink and the snake has given chase,” Mr Hemeel said.

“It’s not a normal place for a snake to be.”

In the video, the distressed shrieks of the homeowner could be heard as Mr Hemeel removed the near metre-long snake from the fridge.

“They were terrified,” Mr Hemeel said.

“They didn’t like snakes at all. You can hear them screaming.”

In a career first, saving the sneaky slithered from an ice bath, Mr Hemeel said it was a catch he won’t forget.

“A first time seeing that,” he said.

“The snake didn’t go in the fridge, it poked its head where the ice came out. Bit odd as they don't like cold, full stop.”

For anyone looking to avoid unwanted scaly friends popping into their fridge as the weather heats up, Mr Hemeel had a few tips to keep the snakes on ice.

“Keep all your doors shut, look to stick your finger in gaps and if it fits, it can get in,” he said.

“If you do see a snake, keep an eye on it from a safe distance and call a snake catcher.

“I make it look easy, but that’s 25 years of experience, so don’t do what I do, because you will get bitten.”
