Australian supermarket wars are heating up again with the return of one of the biggest checkout promotions of the decade.

Woolworths has partnered with Disney to mark the global icon’s 100th anniversary with a new collectable range – Disney 100 Wonders Collector Cards.

For every $30 spent, shoppers can collect a pack of three cards that will feature one of 100 character cards from across the Disney universe, including fan favourites from Marvel, Pixar and Star Wars, as well as the opportunity to get the ‘ultra rare’ holographic Walt Disney card.

Woolworths Senior Manager Collectibles and Continuity, Paul Stibbard, said: “Our customers of all ages love Disney, and for those who are also passionate about card collecting, this is an extra reward when they shop with us”.

Antiques and collectables expert Rick Milne said Aussies who managed to get their hands on the rare card, along the with rest of the collection, it could be “worth a lot of money”.

But they were not the sort of collection to appreciate over the years.

“The modern collectibles is what’s hot now, in the heat of them moment. As a result this will be top of mind but, two years down the track, this won’t be selling for the same prices as it will now,” he said.

“This will be hot for one year and after that it becomes old. It doesn’t have the same interest.”

He encouraged Aussies to keep their cards in a folder to help retain their value, and avoid from securing them with a rubber band or leaving them to depths of the school bag.

Mr Milne said these marketing campaigns could change shopper behaviours, particularly for those with children.

The choice of where to shop is “almost entirely driven by children” who are collecting the items, he said.

“Some people will change their buying place (supermarket) depending on what is on offer,” Mr Milne said.

Tim Everett, vice president and general manager, Consumer Products Commercialisation, at The Walt Disney Company Australia & New Zealand, said it was proud to offer a “collectable honouring our history, stories and characters”.

“We love how passionate Aussies are about our characters and we look forward to seeing how Woolworths customers celebrate through building their Disney 100 Wonders Collector Cards collections,” he said.

The new Disney cards will be available from Wednesday, July 26.
