Travelling Film Festival arrives to Toowoomba BCC Cinemas with a stunning cinematic line-up

The beloved Travelling Film Festival returns to Toowoomba over the weekend, showcasing some of the world’s best cinema. See what’s on the program here.

Australia’s Travelling Film Festival is back in Toowoomba ready to bring together the Garden City’s cinephiles.

Travelling Film Festival area champion representative Stephen Payton said the festival was an offshoot of the Sydney Film Festival and has been running for 49 years.

“It’s an excellent opportunity to travel the world sitting in an armchair,” Mr Payton said.

“You get to experience lots of different cultures, identities, and narratives usually brought to independent or non-commercial cinemas.

“In recent years, especially since streaming has taken off, getting people to the cinema is a tall order. That is why film festivals are so special.”

Travelling Film Festival manager Annie Parnell said the event keeps coming back because Toowoomba audiences ask for it every year.

“We recognise there is a sophisticated culture and a great arts community in Toowoomba,” Ms Parnell said.

“We get great films at the festival and regional audiences deserve to see them too.”

Across the three days, six feature films and three Australian short films in a range of genres will be playing, all guaranteed to have you discussing the film for weeks after.

Opening night will kick off with a feature film, BlackBerry, a dark comedy about the invention of the BlackBerry phone against the rise of mobile phone technology.

But the standout for the weekend is Shayda. Directed by Iranian-Australian filmmaker Noora Niasari, the story revolves around an Iranian woman who finds refuge with her daughter at a women’s shelter from her husband. Shayda is a heart-wrenching tale built on compassion and courage.
