One of Queensland’s most ambitious and bizarre art exhibitions will open in Toowoomba this weekend as part of a massive regional tour.

Patricia Piccinini’s Curious Affection, which includes hyper-realistic depictions of fantastical animals that often resemble human beings, has received acclaim since it opened at the Gallery of Modern Art in 2018.

“Influenced by science, nature, fiction and the unconscious, Patricia’s ongoing concern is the social impact and moral responsibility of advanced technology on people, animals and our planet,” tour curator Peter McKay said.

“Her fantastical creatures and environments are, in a way, propositions about possible futures.”

Highlights include a major new work titled The Couple 2018, a sculpture of two figures inside a tent in a loving embrace.

The exhibition opens at the Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery on Ruthven Street from Saturday until February 22.
