No matter how far or how wide we roam, the one thing that tends to unite all Australians is a love of Vegemite.
But the classic spread seems to divide our international friends, who aren’t well-versed when it comes to how one appropriately consumes it. (Obviously, ratio is key).
As an Aussie offering on Sunday night’s The Voice Australia, local coaches Jessica Mauboy and Guy Sebastian conducted a blind tasting of the nation’s delicacies with new US coach Jason Derulo, with the assistance of seasoned Australian visitor Rita Ora.
Adorned in a broadbrimmed cork hat, Derulo was first treated to an Arnott’s Tim Tam, which he said was “unbelievable”.
“I love that,” he said.
Next, he was presented a spoonful of Vegemite. Before even tasting it, Derulo was put-off by the smell, “Woah …”
“It’s not bad at all,” Ora assured him. “It’s edible. We all eat it here,” Mauboy added.
Squirming as he swallowed it, Derulo uttered, “Uh uh.”
“Not gonna lie, that Vegemite was not it,” he added. “I was like ‘Oh damn, they just fed me s**t on live television.”
One international star who doesn’t mind heavy amounts of Vegemite? Tom Hanks.
The Oscar-winner mortified Aussies when he shared a photo of his breakfast on social media back in 2020 while he was isolating with Covid-19 during production on Elvis.
His toast was littered with obscene amounts of Vegemite, triggering an intense social media reaction.

“Oh my, Mr Hanks, not even the bravest Aussie would put THAT much vegemite on a piece of toast!,” one user wrote. “Life is like a tube of Vegemite. Don’t try it all at once,” another wrote.
“Corona won’t kill you but that amount of Vegemite will!”, another added.
“That amount of Vegemite would put anyone in hospital. I developed a yeast infection just looking at this picture. (Also, best wishes for a speedy recovery.),” a fourth said.
Hanks swiftly addressed the outcry, saying he had since “learned not to spread my Vegemite so thick.”
The Voice Australia continues Monday at 7.30pm on Seven Network
