Lily-Rose Depp’s scandalous new series The Idol has received an enthusastic standing ovation at the Cannes Film Fesitval.

Despite a few controversial scenes airing during the world premiere of the first two episodes last night, the audience loved every minute of the raunchy new series, giving it a five-minute applause.

The show, which is coming soon to Binge, also stars The Weeknd – real name Abel Tesfaye – in his acting debut.

The moments in question included a raunchy masturbation scene with ice cubes, followed by lewd revenge porn photos being splashed onscreen. Throw in explicit nudity throughout the episodes and it was clear why the crowd could not get enough.

The series premieres on Binge on June 5, so Aussie fans don’t have long to go until they can watch the controversial series, which revolves around a pop star named Jocelyn (Depp) and her complex relationship with a self-help guru and nightclub promoter Tedros (Tesfaye). The pair embark on a turbulent relationship which soon derails Jocelyn’s career comeback.

The Idol has been compared to the rise and fall of real-life superstar Britney Spears, with show’s teaser trailer released last month paying homage to the singer.

The teaser even samples Spears’ hit song Gimme More as Jocelyn says in a voiceover: “When’s the last truly f***ing nasty, nasty, bad pop girl?”

The Idol has been surrounded by controversy after creator Sam Levinson – the same mastermind behind Binge show Euphoria – took over from director Amy Seimetz last year.

A piece published by Rolling Stone magazine last month alleged that 13 members of the cast and crew have since felt discomfort with the show’s new creative direction, calling it sexually “disturbing”.

“It was like any rape fantasy that any toxic man would have in the show – and then the woman comes back for more because it makes her music better,” one crew member told the magazine of Levinson’s version, according to Page Six.

“It was like, ‘What is this? What am I reading here?’ It was like sexual torture porn,” said another production team member.

But the show’s stars Depp – who is the daughter of Hollywood star Johnny Depp and model Vanessa Paradis – and Tesfaye are backing Levinson and his vision.

“Never have I felt more supported or respected in a creative space, my input and opinions more valued,” the 23-year-old actress told Page Six via her representative, while Tesfaye condemned the Rolling Stone in an Instagram Story at the time, calling the magazine “irrelevant” and “past its prime”.
