Superstar Robbie Williams is ready to blitz Melbourne with a free mini concert at Federation Square on Thursday.
The show, GOLD104.3 presents Robbie Williams Live at Fed Square, an iHeartLIVE event, will be the highlight of a Robbie revolution across the city, including fan meet and greets, question and answer forums, and a gala screening of his biopic, Better Man.
Williams will perform the free all-ages show, containing a short set of his biggest hits, on the main stage at Federation Square from 5pm on Thursday.
After the free concert, Williams will do an in-conversation event with broadcaster Craig Huggins to “share insights about the film and his love of Melbourne.”
From there, Williams will head to a gala showing of Better Man at the Astor Theatre in Windsor. He will also participate in Q&A session before the screening.
Williams will also meet with bosses from VicScreen, which helped lure the biopic to be shot in Melbourne.
“To be ringing in the New Year in the country where my biopic movie, Better Man, was shot will be the perfect end to 2024 and the ideal start to 2025,” Williams said in a statement.
“I can’t wait to perform and celebrate with my incredible Australian fans.”
Williams celebrated New Year’s Eve with a concert in Sydney.
He was unable to attend the Melbourne premiere of Better Man last month, but is making up for lost time to acknowledge the city where it was made, and the film’s backers and supporters.
The visit also continues Williams’ ongoing love affair with Australia.
“In Australia I’m allowed to be the creature that I wanted to be when I was dreaming of being a pop star growing up,” Williams told the Herald Sun last month.
“There is a full embracing of me and my character and in this day and age where people get cancelled for saying the most banal things, I’m very aware of that in England. I’m not aware of that in Australia when I come there. I say things in Australia that I couldn’t say in the UK and I’m allowed to.
He added: “I have just fallen in love with your country and the people and if I could be born again anywhere it would be Australia.”
His Melbourne visit will also include official honours.
Melbourne Lord Mayor, Nick Reece, who will present Williams with Keys to the City to credit his contribution to Victoria’s capital.
Better Man, co-produced, co-written and directed by Melbourne born Michael Gracey, was shot in Melbourne in 2022. Williams is played by a CGI monkey in the biopic.
Creative Industries Minister, Colin Brooks, said the production created 2920 jobs, including 428 from regional Victoria, supported 904 local businesses, and injected over $142 million into Victoria’s economy.
Mr Brooks added: “It is the largest film production ever made in Victoria”.
