Osher Gunsberg’s stinging response to Masked Singer viewer’s complaint

The usually mild-mannered Masked Singer host couldn’t hide his frustration when this common viewer complaint reared its head again last night.

Blowfly revealed to be Australian Idol singer Shannon Noll (The Masked Singer)

The Masked Singer host Osher Gunsberg didn’t hold back when he copped a common viewer criticism during Monday night’s episode of the show – tweeting a deeply sarcastic response to put them in their place.

Monday’s episode saw one of the competition’s worst-kept secrets finally revealed, with the Blowfly unmasked as singer and former Australian Idol star Shannon Noll.

Many fans had picked Noll’s true identity from his first performance, and by the time he was unmasked, half the judging panel were sure it was him, too.

And Gunsberg, tweeting along with the episode from home, revealed to fans that he’d soon figured out the Blowfly was Noll – but not because of his voice or the clues.

“I don’t see the clues, I can’t hear the voices when they’re singing as I’m not standing near a speaker – but I KNEW it was Shannon two eps ago when he tapped me on the shoulder and then poked me in the eye, which is the exact trick he used to do back on Idol,” the former Australian Idol co-host tweeted.

The tweet was sent at 8.39pm AEST, moments after Noll had been unmasked – for viewers on Australia’s east coast, at least. But as one South Australian viewer reminded Günsberg, they were only halfway through the episode.

“Er … time zone, dude. Rooster has only just finished singing in South Australia,” the person wrote, complete with an angry emoji.

The mild-mannered TV host couldn’t hide his frustration with being blamed for a viewer checking Twitter while watching a show that might get spoiled for them.

“Oh I’m so sorry that I came into your house, unlocked your phone, and forced you to look at an app,” he wrote.

“I won’t do it again. Also, if you don’t know to not look at Twitter when you don’t live in an East Coast time zone, you probably shouldn’t own a phone.”

Other fans were in agreement with Gunsberg: “Maybe don’t go on social media if you don’t want spoilers?” one said.

“It’s called willpower. Put your phone in another room while watching TV. Personal responsibility,” another wrote.

“Every time, without a doubt, people still don’t know how social media works,” said another.

Noll’s exit from the competition leaves four performers remaining on The Masked Singer (and – spoiler alert! – don’t read on if you don’t want to know our educated guesses about who each one is).

There’s the Snapdragon, who has been identifiable as former The Voice star Sheldon Riley from the moment he first opened his mouth thanks to that soaring voice. The Mirrorball – who Pussycat Dolls fans picked as former member Melody Thornton before the season even began. Wildcard contestant Microphone, who all the clues and that very distinctive voice point to being former Destiny’s Child star Michelle Williams. And finally the Rooster, who has done a very good job of disguising his vocals all season but who the clues – and at least one judge – have pinned as Hugh Sheridan.

The new judges are nailing the guesses this season (not you, Hughesy).

Credit to the judges this season, who have been on an unprecedented run of sensible guesses – Chrissie Swan correctly picked three celebs in a row, and Mel B is now rivalling her with two bang-on guesses in a row.

But we have at least one more genuine surprise this season, with Ten scheduling an extra episode of the show for this Wednesday. The episode will introduce – and unmask – a new one-episode wonder, ‘Poodle’, who is being billed as an “international megastar”.

The Masked Singer continues 7.30pm tonight on Ten
