Network 10’s new news program which replaced The Project smashed by the competition

Network 10’s new hope in the news space, 10 News+, has launched with woeful audience numbers.

Network 10’s new hope in the news space, 10 News+, has launched with woeful audience numbers.

The new show, which replaced The Project after 16 years and anchored by former Seven Network reporters Amelia Brace and Denham Hitchcock was watched by an average metropolitan audience of just 191,000 people according to overnight ratings released by OzTAM.

9 News, in the same timeslot was watched by an average of 961,000 and Seven News 905,000.

The overnight reports from OzTAM do not include viewers who watched on streaming apps (Broadcast Video On Demand).

On YouTube, clips from last night’s episode averaged about 7500 viewers.

Later figures in the Virtual Oz report which look at the national audience, including regional viewers, and report the BVOD viewership show 291,000 people watched 10 News+ nationally and an additional 19,000 people watched via a streaming platform.

The 10 News+ launch pales in comparison to even the show it replaced. A week on week comparison shows last Monday’s episode of The Project was watched by an average of 262,000 people, a full 71,000 people more than tuned in last night.

10 News+ was also beaten by the network’s own 5pm bulletin, which had an average audience of 274,000 in the capital cities.

In a statement, a spokeswoman for 10 said the network was committed to the new format.

“10 is taking a long-term, multi-platform view of audience development. Building a loyal news audience takes time, and we are prepared for gradual growth as audiences discover and connect with our unique approach to news delivery across many platforms,” the spokeswoman said.

“10 is fully committed to 10 News+. This is a marathon, not a sprint. We are investing in building a sustainable, quality multi-platform news service that will grow and evolve with our audience’s needs over time.”

A spokeswoman also noted that 10 News+ numbers were 18% up on the network’s timeslot average.

The first episode of 10 News+ included a 20-minute investigation from Hitchcock into Australian woman Debbie Voulgaris serving 15 years in a Taiwan prison for drug smuggling, and a live interview with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

Reactions online were mixed with some praising Hitchcock’s investigation while others described the program as “Temu” A Current Affair.
