Sydney rapper takes out top TikTok song in 2021

A Sydney rapper has taken out the title for top song in the world on TikTok in 2021, featuring in videos viewed millions of times.

Whether you intended to or not, chances are high you've had TikTok-famous songs in your head all year — or is that just me?

Considering approximately 430 songs had more than one billion video views as TikTok sounds in 2021 (a threefold increase over 2020), chances are it’s not just me.

The most popular of these songs have featured in videos that garnered as many as 20 billion views or more.

TikTok has released the artists that topped its viewing charts, and none other than Sydney rapper Masked Wolf nabbed the top song in the world with his 2019 hit Astronaut in the Ocean.

He also took out the most Shazamed song of 2021 for the same track, so he’s having a real moment. As someone who has this song on my Spotify playlists, I approve.

“For the second year running we are beyond chuffed to have an artist from our region give us TikTok’s top global song,” said TikTok Australia and New Zealand’s Director of Music, Ollie Wards.

“With so much music being discovered on TikTok and artists being exported to global success, we can’t wait to support Australian and Kiwi artists into 2022.”

The Kid LAROI also scraped into the top five songs list globally on TikTok with his Justin Beiber collab, Stay.

Meanwhile, in Australia, the top five TikTok tunes were:

• Adderall (Corvette Corvette) – Popp Hunna

• Best Ever – Polo Frost

• Beggin’ – Måneskin

• Like I Can – Sam Smith

• Bills, Bills, Bills – Destiny’s Child

I’m glad to see I’m not the only one for whom that 90s Destiny’s Child banger really summed up everything that happened in 2021.
