WHEN Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl comes to town, the man has got to rock.
So he convinced his “date”, drummer Taylor Hawkins, to bring his covers band Chevy Metal to join them for a gig while on his whirlwind visit to spruik upcoming new record Concrete and Gold.
About 300 Foos faithful plus celebrity fans including footballer Andrew Johns and television personalities Allison Langdon and Mike Willessee Jr, who hosted Grohl at a BBQ at their home on Monday, enjoyed a rollicking and hilarious set of “songs we wish we wrote.”

It was a dizzying collection of covers which careened from Rolling Stones’ Bitch and Miss You to 80s one-hit wonders My Sharona and Turning Japanese.
There was a lot of love in the room for Billy Joel’s classic hit You May Be Right.
Grohl sported a non-ironic ABBA T-shirt — this rocker loves his pop music — and clearly relished the opportunity to play second fiddle to drummer Hawkins and their mates Wiley Hodgen and Brent Woods who came to play Chevy Metal’s first ever gig in Australia at Sydney’s Oxford Art Factory.

After a massive night on Monday downing tequila shots with friends after a listening party for Concrete and Gold, Grohl asked the audience to source him a new liver.
“If anyone knows a good doctor, I think I need a f***ing liver transplant. Can you feel it in your liver?” he asked the crowd.
Grohl looked ecstatic to be playing guitar and dealing comic relief as Hawkins and his bandmates took centre stage.
But the charismatic frontman couldn’t help stealing the show.
“We have to keep it easy in Chevy Metal world; they dumbed down for me,” he said, celebrating the musical chops of his bandmates.
He did take over lead vocal duties for Tom Petty’s Break Down.
The Foo Fighters have a long history of playing surprise gigs in Australia in smaller clubs — or the legendary Goat Island concert several years ago — and the Chevy Metal covers show added to that long list of musical memories they share with fans here.
They are expected to announce their Australian tour for next year ahead of the album release on September 15.
