IT’S the most incongruous pairing since Arnold Schwarzenegger teamed up with Danny DeVito 26 years ago in Twins.
Kylie Minogue is to star opposite Dwayne Johnson in disaster movie San Andreas, currently being filmed at Village Roadshow on the Gold Coast.
The diminutive songstress, who is almost half a metre shorter than the former WWE wrestler, will play Beth, a woman caught in the worst possible place when a magnitude-9 earthquake hits California.
The $US100 million film follows a rescue chopper pilot (Johnson) and his wife (Carla Gugino) who make a dangerous journey across California to rescue their estranged daughter in the wake of the quake.
Minogue’s film tastes have always been eclectic — spanning horror (Cut), musical-romance (Moulin Rouge) and comedy (Pauly Shore’s Bio-Dome).
Most recently she followed the trippy, Cannes Film Festival-selected French drama Holy Motors with “lesbian werewolf horror romance” Jack and Diane, with Riley Keough and Juno Temple.
Minogue is no stranger to action, having starred opposite Jean-Claude van Damme in Street Fighter (1994). But San Andreas qualifies as her first disaster flick.
Johnson, aka The Rock, has been filming on the Gold Coast for two months.
During that time he has given several sneak peeks into his stunt work, instagramming pictures of himself parasailing out of helicopters and down mountains.
“I’m no madman or adrenaline junkie,” he wrote to his millions of followers, “just a guy who likes to get s--- done.”
In an interview on set, the Fast and Furious and GI Joe star said it was “by far” the most action he had seen on a film.
“Not only did I want to honour the real rescue men and women (I had met) but also to create something cool for the audience because they are savvy and if there are ways where we don’t have to cut around me rappelling out of a helo at 300-feet down a cliff then great, let’s give it a shot,” he said.
“I have got a great stunt team who I trust. I actually did (a stunt) on my birthday which was great. It was like this cool shot out the helo all the way down.
“It was a great birthday present.”
San Andreas is scheduled to open June 4 next year in the US, and June 5 in Australia.
