IS Fifty Shades of Grey suitable for kids? France certainly thinks so.
The much-anticipated adaptation of the book by British author E.L James premiered in cinemas around the world this week. As news.com.au earlier reported, the film includes 20 minutes worth of sex (see: nudity, spanking, blindfolds, ropes, handcuffs).
The films sex scenes have split authorities in different parts of the world. The British Board of Film Classification agreed to screen the film uncut but only over 18s will be admitted.
Other countries are far less prudish.
Australia classified Fifty Shades MA 15+, which means teens can still attend. We’re certain they will. US audiences under 18 years can attend with a parent, but we now know how that turns out.
In France, the situation is completely different. Variety reports the French National Film Board gave Sam Taylor-Johnson’s flick a relaxed PG 12 rating. Consider for a moment that Big Hero 6, also out now, has a similar rating. And that film is about an inflatable cartoon super hero.
Jean-François Mary, who presides over the French ratings board, said the film was a “romance” and nothing more.
“We could even call it a bleuette — a sentimental tale,” she told Variety.
