HE’S the action hero we all like to think of as indestructible, but Jason Statham has admitted there was one daring stunt that almost killed him.
On the set of The Expendables 3, Statham was forced to leap from a truck he was driving before it plunged into the sea after a stunt went horribly wrong.
Sylvester Stallone spoke about the near-death moment at the Expendables 3 premiere in London, saying his co-star owed is life to his strong swimming ability after the brakes on the truck failed.
“He faced death,” the 68-year-old Hollywood heavyweight told The Mirror.
“He was test-driving a three-tonne truck and the brakes run out.
“It went down 60ft into the Black Sea and became impaled.
“Luckily we had taken the doors off before.
“If anyone else had been in that truck we would have been dead because we were all wearing heavy boots and gun belts. We would have drowned, but because Jason is an Olympic-quality diver he got out of it.”
For those who didn’t know, the 47-year-old competed for England at the Auckland Commonwealth Games in 1990 as a diver before he began his acting career.
Statham, who dates supermodel Rosie Huntington-Whitely, got his acting break in Guy Ritchie’s Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrel s in 1998. He has since gone on to become one of Hollywood’s biggest, baddest action stars.
