Twisters director admits cast and crew battled real tornadoes during filming

Seasoned cinemaphiles are destined to experience an acute sense of deja vu as Hollywood remains stuck in its Reboot Era.

Risk-averse studios are as obsessed with rebooting beloved films as they are for (mostly unimaginative) prequels and sequels.

The cinema schedule in recent years, and 2025 and 2026, has been crowded with prequels including Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and sequels such as the anticipated Bridget Jones 4, welcoming back Renée Zellweger’s beloved character, and Practical Magic 2, starring Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock.

Other honourable mentions of sequels/prequels which have been set so long after the original movies that they are likened to reboots are: Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, Gladiator 2, Twisters, 28 Years Later, The Naked Gun, Toy Story 5, Shrek 4, The Devil Wears Prada 2 and The Karate Kid.

A reboot is taking an existing universe and characters, dusting them off and making them a bright, shiny thing for a new generation of film lovers to claim as their own.

It’s as if Hollywood want to pretends the original (and often the best) version of the classics did not exist.

Think 1978’s Superman with the late Christopher Reeve, which was rebooted as 2006’s Superman Returns with Brandon Routh, then again in 2013 with Man Of Steel starring Henry Cavill.

There will be another Superman film next year, simply titled Superman, hearkening back to the beginning with 31-year-old David Corenswet donning the blue tights.

Here are some of the big screen reboots coming our way:

Directed by Rupert Sanders – the guy who had an affair with Kristen Stewart on the set of Snow White and the Huntsman – The Crow is a reboot of the 1994 film of the same name. The plot of the original and the reboot is the same: a couple is murdered, and the man is resurrected to avenge their deaths. There are some who aren’t happy with the reboot because the original is considered sacred in a way: star Brandon Lee, son of Bruce, was killed on set after live rounds were fired.

Speak No Evil

Release date: September 13, 2024

OK, technically this is a remake, rather than a reboot. It is basically the exact same film as 2022’s Danish horror film Speak No Evil … except it’s in English. Starring James McAvoy, it follows a family who meets another family while on holiday. They all become fast friends and everything is wonderful – until it really isn’t.

Nosferatu

Terrifying vampire Count Orlok is back to terrify a whole new audience. The remake of 1922’s Nosferatu is written and directed by Robert Eggers, who also wrote and directed the critically-acclaimed The Witch. Nosferatu is based on Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula, and stars Bill Skarsgård (who played the clown in IT), Nicholas Hoult and Lily-Rose Depp.

Fantastic Four

Release date: July 25, 2025

Starring everyone’s favourite Mandalorian Pedro Pascal as Mister Fantastic, the reboot of 2005’s Fantastic Four follows the adventures of our four superheroes as they battle The Silver Surfer. Unlike the original, which starred Jessica Alba and Chris Evans, this new Fantastic Four is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Blade

Release date: November 7, 2025

Watch out, Nosferatu! The vampire hunter originally played by Wesley Snipes in 1998 will now be played by Academy Award-winner Mahershala Ali in the reboot. Armed with his very big blade and snazzy sunglasses, this new Blade is also part of the MCU and is an integral part of the ongoing superhero franchise.

Final Destination: Bloodlines

Release date: Sometime in 2025

Some 25 years after the first Final Destination film (there were four sequels), the relaunch is underway, with the movie set for release next year. The premise is the same – someone has a premonition of them all dying in very horrific ways and then they spend the rest of the movie trying not to die in very horrific ways.

Not much is known about the new Matrix, which will be helmed by The Martian screenwriter Drew Goddard. It could ostensibly be Matrix part 5, but it will be the first movie that does not directly involve co-creators Lana or Lilly Wachowski (although Lana is attached to executive-produce). Importantly, we don’t know if original stars Keanu Reeves, Carrie Anne-Moss and Laurence Fishburne will return either.
