Deadpool v Wolverine smashes box office records: Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman’s net worth compared

Deadpool & Wolverine is box office gold for Hollywood but the 20-year bromance between its stars is proving to be even more lucrative.

Deadpool V Wolverine: Megastars Fortunes Revealed

The Ryan Reynolds/Hugh Jackman bromance is continuing to mean big bucks at the box office with the pair’s monster hit Deadpool & Wolverine smashing the US$1 billion dollar mark globally this weekend.

The Disney/Marvel superhero comedy passed the $1 billion mark in global ticket sales, with $494.3 million ($A751 million) in North America and $535 million ($A813 million) internationally, industry watcher Exhibitor Relations said.

Warner Bros.’ 2019 thriller Joker was the only other R-rated film to reach the $1 billion milestone, according to Hollywood Reporter.

It’s a stunning result for Hollywood for an industry that has suffered through the pandemic and after.

Deadpool & Wolverine’s success has got stars Reynolds and Jackman reportedly trying to figure out how to expand on the idea, including bringing in Spider-Man’s Tom Holland for another installment.

But right now, it’s Reynolds and Jackman the fans are flocking to see,

Whether they’re serenading each other on talk shows, playing with puppies to get them adopted, cooking for Gordon Ramsay, taking lie detector tests or debating whether Blake Lively could do better, the adorable 20-year bromance between the Australian and the Canadian is box office gold.

But it’s not just on the big screen where the two show off their considerable talents. Off screen, they’re savvy business operators who have used their movie star charm to expand their own business empires.

Here, we take a closer look at just how Jackman and Reynolds have acquired their very serious – and substantial – fortunes.

WHAT IS THEIR NET WORTH?

Reynolds’ net worth is estimated at around a staggering $536 million while Jackman’s net worth is estimated at around $275 million but reports have suggested it could be even higher.

ON SCREEN EARNINGS

Both Reynolds and Jackman command around $30 million per film. For his role in the Wolverine franchise, Jackman has banked $150 million alone. Now, both are set to cash in on the success of Deadpool & Wolverine where Reynolds serves as a producer and both he and Jackman are said to be taking box office points at the back end, which means big bucks.

ACCOLADES

Jackman takes the cake with this one, winning several awards including an Emmy, a Golden Globe, a Grammy, and two Tonys. He’s also been nominated for an Academy Award, a British Academy Film Award, two Screen Actors Guild Awards and a Laurence Olivier Award. Jackman was inducted in the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2012, received a Special Tony Award in 2012, and earned the Companion of the Order of Australia in 2019.

For his part, Reynolds’ has won an Emmy, a Critics Choice Award, an MTV Award and was awarded an American Cinematheque Award in 2022. He’s also been nominated for a Golden Globe and a Grammy.

Both have been anointed People’s Sexiest Man Alive – Jackman in 2008, and Reynolds in 2010.

ENDORSEMENTS

Not surprisingly, high-end brands can’t get enough of Jackman with the 55 year old picking up some extra bucks for his role as a global ambassador for iconic Aussie shoe brand RM Williams and German luxury brand Mont Blanc. He’s also fronted advertising campaigns for Qantas, Indian multinational brand Micromax and US coffee brand Keurig.

Reynolds, meanwhile, has appeared in ad campaigns for colognes by high-end brands Armani and Hugo Boss, and has lucrative endorsement deals with Samsung and Hyundai.

BUSINESS INTERESTS

As if being a globally beloved Hollywood star wasn’t enough, Reynolds has also become a bona fide business titan. And despite branding himself “no wizard” at investing, the 47 year old has made serious bank.

Reynolds held a 10 per cent ownership stake in Aviation American Gin (he fronted many of the brand’s tongue-in-cheek ad campaigns), until he sold his share of the company to British liquor giant Diageo in 2020 for $186 million. (The brand, which he co-founded ultimately sold for $930 million.) In 2023, Mint Mobile — of which Reynolds reportedly owned 25 per cent – sold to major telecommunications company T-Mobile in the US for $2 billion, equating to a staggering $458 million payday for the star.

Famously, he is also the co-owner of one of the world’s oldest soccer teams, Wrexham AFC, with actor pal Rob McElhenney. The investment has been a raging success with the previously flailing club team now promoted to League One (English soccer’s third tier) and through Welcome to Wrexham — the fly-on-the-wall documentary charting the progress of Reynolds and McElhenney as team owners.

Meanwhile, Jackman’s business ventures have also proven lucrative. He founded Laughing Man Coffee Company in 2011, inspired by a trip to Ethiopia, which donates all profits to charity.

He’s no longer involved in the running of the business but says he is still “a friend and proud founder of the Laughing Man mission and Foundation”.

REAL ESTATE

Jackman owns several high-value properties in both the US and Australia. He and estranged wife Deborra-Lee Furness own a $45 million, five-bedroom triplex apartment overlooking the Hudson River with views of the Statue of Liberty in New York’s exclusive West Village, which they put on the market in 2022.

A year before their shock split in 2023, they purchased a Chelsea penthouse for $33 million. The former couple also purchased a $5.3 million-dollar property in the super-rich enclave of East Hampton in 2016 before spending millions more in a six-year renovation process. Just prior to their split, they put the lavish home up for rent for an eye-watering $255,000 per month.

Jackman and Furness, who share two children, also own an oceanfront apartment in Bondi Beach, which they purchased in 2016 for $5.9 million.

Reynolds has also made a few bucks on properties in Los Angeles and New York.

Currently, Reynolds, wife, actress Blake Lively and the couple’s four children divide their time between their upstate New York seven-bedroom mansion, which they bought for $9 million in 2013 (and which remains their primary residence) and a Tribeca loft in Manhattan where a home can set you back an eye-watering $67 million. No wonder their neighbours are Justin Timberlake and Jennifer Lawrence.

ON STAGE

Jackman reportedly made $1.5 million per week during his eight show per week, 12-month run in The Music Man in 2022, say Hollywood sources. The show broke box office records at Manhattan’s Winter Garden Theatre, helping lift Broadway out of its pandemic doldrums.

In 2019, Jackman embarked on a 90-date world tour for his The Man, The Music, The Show tour, which box office reports stated made $45 million in just the 26-date European/UK leg alone.

PHILANTHROPY

Jackman’s philanthropic activities are vast. He’s involved in the Global Poverty Project and World Vision, and he’s raised millions for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.

Likewise, Reynolds is a dedicated philanthropist. In 2022, he and Lively donated $750,000 to a Canadian charity called Water First Education & Training Inc, which supports local hands-on skills training and education for young Indigenous adults.

Last October, they donated $1.5 million to Red Cross to help children in Israel and Gaza and in the past, they have donated similar amounts to Ukraine charities and Food Bank Canada following the start of the Covid pandemic.

Reynolds has also been on the Board of Directors for The Michael J Fox Foundation since 2009, which raises money for Parkinson’s disease research.
