Bryce Dallas Howard gets brutally honest about her most notorious move flops: ‘You always know’

Jurassic Park star Bryce Dallas Howard has opened up about some of her most notorious box office flops.

Hollywood star Bryce Dallas Howard has opened up about some of her most notorious box office flops.

Despite starring in the likes of Twilight and Jurrasic Park, Howard has also starred in projects that became some of their respective years’ biggest bombs.

She starred in Lady in the Water from director M. Night Shyamalan, which failed to recoup its $154m budget, as well as notorious flop Argylle, which cost over $300m to make but didn’t manage to even hit $150m at the box office.

“You can always see it coming while you’re making it,” Howard recently told The Independent about her movie flops. “I’ve never been shocked when something doesn’t work. But I’m just an actor – you’re there to serve a director’s vision. If a movie doesn’t turn out the way that you envisioned, you can barely feel disappointed because it’s not yours. You’re not the person who’s building the thing.”

Howard said in comparison, she has seen her father, the Oscar-winning filmmaker Ron Howard, break down emotionally when one of his films doesn’t do well.

“It blows him away that I don’t do that,” she said.

She went on to recall a story her father told her about Clint Eastwood back in the day.

When her dad’s 1992 film Far and Away with Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise flopped spectacularly at the box office, he turned to Eastwood for some sage advice.

“He said, ‘Ronnie – a career is like a season of television. You’ve got 24 episodes, some of the episodes are going to be bad, some are going to be serviceable, maybe a little forgettable, and maybe five of those episodes are going to be really strong and last,’” Howard said.

Argylle, from filmmaker Matthew Vaughn, starred the likes of Henry Cavill and Dua Lipa, but their combined starpower failed to help make the film a hit.

In an interview with Empire last year, Vaughn confessed that he genuinely believed the movie was going to be a big success after test screenings ended positively.

“F**k yeah,” Vaughn said when asked if the disappointing reviews from critics were a difficult read for him.

“We had done test screenings that had gone fantastically well. The premiere was a really fun night, and it was like going back to the ‘Snatch’ days where there was such excitement. And I started drinking the Kool-Aid. It’s a fun, feel-good movie, or I thought it was a fun, feel-good movie. We didn’t make ‘Citizen Kane,’ but f**king hell, then the reviews came out and I’m like, ‘Wait, what have I done to offend these people?’ They were vitriolic. I’m not saying the movie’s perfect by any means, but I didn’t think it was offensive. That took me by surprise.”
