Emmy Awards: Aussie star Sarah Snook wins major Emmy for role in Succession

The Aussie star shared a special message for her daughter while accepting her Emmy, as Succession took home multiple awards. See the winners.

All the highlights from this year’s Emmy Awards ceremony

Her breakthrough came on a show about power plays and last night Australian actress Sarah Snook delivered checkmate — her first Emmy and third consecutive awards victory this year.

The 36-year-old’s win in the fiercely competitive Outstanding Lead Actress section at TV’s delayed 2023 awards capped a golden night for Succession, which jagged a total of six nods.

Snook, who recently took home Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards for her role as Shiv Roy fighting to head her family’s billion-dollar Roystar Corporation, said the result reflected how high “the bar was set” in the writing and production.

“Thanks to everyone who voted, and for loving the show as much as we did. We all put our all into it, and the bar was set so high. I think that’s what spurred us on,” Snook said, before thanking her mum and dad.

But her biggest applause was for someone “who won’t understand anything I say at the moment” – her eight-month-old daughter with husband Dave Lawson.

“I carried her in this season, but it was her who carried me,” Snook, who earlier dazzled on the silver carpet in her red Vivienne Westwood gown, with a huge bespoke diamond, emerald and white gold Cartier choker and earrings, said.

“It’s very easy to act when you’re pregnant because you’ve got hormones raging.

“The proximity of her life growing inside me gave me the strength to do this. It’s all for you, from here on out.”

Snook’s win was the only victory for Aussies at the 75th Primetime Emmys with Elizabeth Debicki’s pipped by The White Lotus’ Jennifer Coolidge for Best Supporting Actress in a drama.

Debicki had picked up the Golden Globe and Critics Choice for her stunning portrayal of Princess Diana in the fifth season of hit Netflix royal drama The Crown, but these awards were voted on in August last year during the writers strike which delayed proceedings.

She will be a frontrunner for the 2024 Emmy Awards which will return to their traditional scheduling in September.

Aussies Murray Bartlett and Anna Torv also went home empty-handed.

Succession – the revered HBO series, shown on Binge here, which wrapped its fourth season last year, added six Emmys to its already brimming trophy cabinet including for Snook’s on-screen brother Kieran Culkin, and onscreen husband Matthew MacFadyen, plus Outstanding Drama.

Meanwhile The Bear and Beef continued their sweep of the awards season.

Disney’s The Bear’s first season also picked up six gongs – including Outstanding Actor in a Comedy for star Jeremy Allen White at the expense of Ted Lasso favourite Jason Sudeikis – even though the Academy voted long before that Calvin Klein ad came out.

And Netflix show Beef swept the Limited Series categories, taking home five including lead actress for Ali Wong, lead actor for Steven Yeun.

Legendary singer songwriter Elton John joined the rarefied ranks of the EGOT club – Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and a Tony – as his Disney+ variety show Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium won an Emmy for the Best Variety Special (Live).

John wasn’t able to attend as the result of a knee injury but released a statement saying he was incredibly humbled to become the 19th person to reach EGOT status.

It was a nostalgic 75th edition of the Emmys which included onstage reunions for shows such as The Sopranos, Cheers, Ally McBeal, All in the Family and Grey’s Anatomy.

Host Anthony Anderson kicked off the ceremony in the same vein with a riff on Mister Rogers’ Neighbourhood, culminating in a musical number accompanied by Blink 182’s Travis Barker.

“Television has shaped the world and more importantly it’s shaped me,” he said.

Anderson’s widely-praised Emmys’ stint came just a week after stand-up comedian Jo Koy’s infamous monologue flopped at the Golden Globe awards, but the Black-ish star classily made no reference to the Globes host.
