Elliot Page makes red carpet debut at 2021 Met Gala

US actor Elliot Page has attended his first official event since coming out as transgender, rocking up to the Met Gala in a trendy black suit.

Actor Elliot Page has made his first red carpet appearance at the 2021 Met Gala since coming out as transgender in December.

In what also marked his Met debut, Page sported a black Balenciaga suit accessorised with a green rose pinned to his lapel.

Following in the Converse-clad footsteps of Met Gala co-host Timothée Chalamet, Page opted to pair his suit with black sneakers.

Fans were excited to see Page on the steps of the Met, with one tweeting, “ELLIOT PAGE SAVED THE MET GALA YAL,” while another added, “Elliot Page is the only man I’ll ever love to see in a black suit. That’s it.”

The star, 34, has previously reflected on his past red carpet appearances during an interview with Time, telling the magazine that he “just never recognised [himself]” while dressing up for events.

Page specifically pointed to a harrowing red carpet moment during an interview with Oprah Winfrey in April where he said he “collapsed” at an after-party for the movie Inception.

“There was so much press, so many premieres all around the world,” Page reflected of the craze surrounding the movie’s release in 2010. “I was wearing dresses and heels to pretty much every single event.”

Page said his manager “really believed she was helping me” by providing several dress options to wear for the parties.

“But we got back to the room and she was like, ‘I have a surprise.’ I already had to wear a dress I already had picked out and I went in and there were three dresses laid out, like new dresses to maybe see, and I just like, I lost it,” Page said.

The Juno star also opened up about why it was “crucial and important” for him to share his coming-out story.

“For me, in this time we’re in right now and especially with this horrible backlash we’re seeing towards trans people, particularly trans youth, it really felt imperative to do so,” he said at the time.

Fellow celebrities to attend today’s Met Gala – which was cancelled last year due to Covid – included Billie Eilish, Kim Kardashian, Kendall Jenner, Megan Fox and Lil Nas X.
